I dropped my bean off for her first day of first grade this morning. She’s been dreading the newness of it all. New classroom, new kids, things she doesn’t know that she knows already.

What she doesn’t know is that I’ve been watching her do new things her whole life.

She doesn’t know that I’ve watched her find her footing, wander off, come running back, and wander a little farther the next time - time and time again.
But I do.

So I came home and looked through old photographs of her 😂 heres a small collection of some of my favorites over the last few years.

I really can’t believe I get to do this sometimes. To be invited into people’s homes on one of the biggest days of their lives and somehow trusted to just be there. To watch the hours pass, the work get harder, everyone pull a little closer, and then suddenly there’s a whole new person in the room.

It’s such a big and beautiful job, and I’m grateful for everyone that lets me in. 🤎

I don’t usually photograph weddings, but when I do, I prefer the couple to be wildly in love and just a little bit feral. 🤍 Scope my favorite bride ever.

Okay friends! I think I did it 🤣 a 3 minute reel to sum up a day in my life as a mama, wife, photographer, and student midwife.

Mama life - bed sharing with my 6 year old since birth (we’ve tried separating…it’ll come one of those day when she’s ready), breakfast, hair, dancing, running, snacks, doggo, snuggles.

Wife life - beet hummus, weekly flowers, and a little mall date.

Photographer life - a dress drop off for one of my clients to try on, a micro session for a mama and baby and a little bit of editing.

Student midwife life - a couple office visits, a drawing by a clients sweet kiddo, some baby snuggles, and neonatal resuscitation course work.

And some things to fill my own cup - coffee before anyone’s awake, pre-work lift sesh, and car berries.

So grateful for this big beautiful life.

The ridiculous abundance of ordinary life.

I kept thinking about that while I was editing these.

Because really, nothing much is happening here. There’s a new baby, but everyone else is just… in the kitchen. Kids are standing on chairs and licking the beaters. Someone’s making something in the KitchenAid. Grandma is holding the baby. Great-grandma wanders in. The dog needs to know what’s going on.

Everyone is talking and eating and holding the baby and getting in each other’s way.

Everyone is just there.

And god, there is so much in just there.

I think that’s what I’m always trying to photograph. Not what life looks like when we clear the counters and put on the right clothes and decide that now we’re going to make something beautiful.

Just what it looks like when it’s already beautiful.

The crowded kitchen. Bare feet. A half-finished recipe. People wandering in and out of the frame. A brand-new baby getting folded into a family that was already in motion.

The ridiculous abundance of ordinary life.

All of it, already happening.

One of my favorite parts of raising her has been watching the relationships she nurtures in the pure way only kiddos can.

Yes the people, and also not just the people.

There are the places she knows by heart, the little routines we don’t even think about anymore, and theres her dog.

My daughter got her for her third birthday, and somewhere along the way they just became an inseparable pair.

These were taken in the spring for her sixth birthday, but to me they are about so much more then a date; they’re about the cute clothes, the flowers that bloom on her birthday, the wildness of childhood, the pink stained hair, the unconditional love, the furry bestie

I hope she always remembers what it felt like to grow up with her good dog. 🤍

I'm just loving on these soon-to-be big siblings lately - we're always thinking about your growing belly and how the little baby's growth is doing but these sweet bigger kiddos are doing so much inner growth too 🥹 stretching themselves to be the brother or sister they need to be
