I'm a second-generation Montanan, born, raised, and still living in my hometown of Missoula. Intimately connected to place and the four seasons, I've left for periods of time, but always returned to this valley, her mountains, her rivers and dear friends. I've enjoyed a l

ong career in the healing arts earning my doctorate degree and establishing a private practice in Transpersonal Psychology. It was only natural that I would bring my intuitively trained eye to the art of photography; the passion taking hold about 12 years ago when I dubbed my backyard "Walden." The yard was large with a 100 feet of creek frontage, which was where I parked myself - with a macro lens and a promise to stay put. The challenge I had set was to find beauty where I was sitting and not be looking elsewhere. This, a metaphor that became a discovery of worlds within a world beginning with the textured surface of water-logged wood that came down in the spring run-off and leading to the IceScapes of winter. Ultimately, the discovery was more about light than the subject itself.

According to Freezeout Lake Management, the annual spring migration of swan and geese may not happen this year. The lakes are still frozen; the seed rich farmlands are still snow covered. Last year's average at this time was 38,000 snow geese and about 2000 swans. Yesterday, the count was 500 and 0. Of course I'm disappointed and amazed as well. How do these birds know to not come? Do they send out a scout or what?

Male Great Blue Herons collect the nest material, gathering sticks from the ground and nearby shrubs and trees, and from unguarded and abandoned nests. Hanging in mid air, he presents his sticks to the female, who weaves them into the nest.

I never tire of watching these birds. And the good news is their return to the valley. Oh happy day; oh happy spring!

Winter into Spring... The Lee Metcalf waters are opening up and the geese are coming home. Winged flight and the morning ruckus, what a way to greet the day.

We've got another Arctic blast coming in. Hoping for the sun and you know where I'll be. Up the creek to catch the beauty reflected in ice.
