The most beautiful family centered birth ✨

It can be a relatively controversial choice, especially with societal norms censoring and hiding birth from us all, especially children. It’s normal to fear what we don’t know. But how can we know if we aren’t allowed to see, hear, or experience it?

If incorporating littles into your birth space feels right for you and your family, there are ways to support that dream.

This birth shows just how seamless and beautiful integrating children into the birth space can be with preparation and support. ✨

Hire a doula with lactation expertise ✨

When you hire me as a doula you’re getting the expertise and support of an IBCLC (international board certified lactation consultant).

When babe is here, I can assist you with attaching babe to the chest.

I validate the aspects that are going well and can give suggestions to optimize comfort and milk transfer.

If babe has difficulty latching, I can teach you how to hand express and feed your babe successfully that way.

If you’re choosing to pump early on or need to because baby is having difficulty directly feeding from your chest, I can fit you for the optimal fl**ge size, teach you how to use your pump, and create a plan to build and maintain your milk supply.

If you’re feeding with a bottle, I can show you how to pace bottle feed in a way that is individualized and infant-centered.

If you have any continued concerns or difficulties feeding your baby as they grow, I can come support you with an in-home lactation/feeding visit.

No matter what your goals are, you will feel supported, confident, and empowered. ✨

LABOR INDUCTION TIP ✨

My biggest tip if your medical team is recommending induction, is to ask questions! If you don’t even know where to start with questions, here’s an easy acronym: BRAIN.

B: Benefits. What are the benefits for me? My baby? My birth process?

R: Risks. What are the risks of this for me? My baby? My birth process?

A: Alternatives. What are alternatives to this intervention?

I: Intuition. What is your intuition telling you about the information your receiving?

N: What if I say no? Not now? Or never, to this intervention?

When should you use this acronym? Any time you don’t have full understanding of an intervention for you or for baby.

Some medical professionals are really skilled at incorporating details that already answer these questions during every step of your care. The hard truth, is that it’s unfortunately not across the board. Sometimes they become task oriented and operate in a “doing to” instead of “doing with” method of care.

Your care should always feel like it’s being done with you, your support system and your baby. And if it doesn’t feel that way, speak up, ask questions, carve out time to get your questions answered instead of feeling rushed and pressured, hire a doula, and examine the research/evidence yourself to help make decisions that truly honor you and your family. 🫶🏼

My biggest love language (by a long shot) is quality time. 🫶🏼

Whether it’s documenting your wedding, supporting you as a birth doula or photographer, family photographer, lactation consultant, and all the other million hats I wear 🤣 I want you to know that connecting with you is the most important part of my job. It’s the reason that I love what I do so much.

I want you to feel safe, seen, and loved. This is the foundation of my art and my support. Your moments (big or small) are sacred to me.

Eliza + Abbey, thank you for trusting me to be part of your special day. I’m so excited to see what your future holds together. 🫶🏼

**For those that don’t know: I only do small, intimate weddings and a select few per year. The focus of my business has shifted, you can learn more on my website (link in bio).

Mini newborn sessions for birth doula clients✨✨

In my career of photographing newborns and new families, it’s never made sense or been realistic to offer a “mini” newborn session.

I was pleasantly surprised how seamlessly this fit into the postpartum visit that comes with my birth doula package.

In the postpartum visit we can debrief about the birth, discuss how your transition at home is going, assess lactation/infant feeding, and talk through anything and everything going on in your early postpartum/newborn phase of life. It’s so sacred to show up and hold space for this beautiful, vulnerable and challenging time in people’s lives. 🫶🏼

I’m thinking about making this an official offering, but only available for doula clients as an add on to the doula package. What do ya’ll think? ✨

Why birth photography? ✨

Even those seeking out birth photography, I occasionally am asked something along the lines of, “if I’m not going to put these photos on my walls at home, why should I invest in birth photography?”.

Firstly, I do have some photos from my second babe’s birth in frames, for all who come in our home to appreciate. 🤣 but that’s obviously a personal choice you get to make for your own home.

The top reason for me, is to document and preserve the emotional significance of birth. Birth is a raw, vulnerable, and transformative event. It is invaluable to me, to have those first moments with my baby documented. To have those first times holding their hand, holding skin to skin, moments of my partner adoring our baby. The honest moments of experiencing, “I did it, my baby’s here!”. It all is incredibly sacred to me.

Comment below with your reasons you chose birth photography or adore the photos taken at your birth (by doula or other support person). ✨

Photos from the first birth of the year, I can’t believe it’s been a few months since this sweet babe entered the world! 🥹

Birth is not black and white. There is no singular “right” way to birth for every person. We as human beings are far more complex than that. What you choose for yourself is the right choice for who you are and the information you have in any given moment.

I know that my role as a doula/birth worker is impactful and important. But please don’t discount yourself as the birthing person. Your story impacts me equally as much as mine impacts you. I am not your savior, you are. As a doula, I can help you get there; help you understand your power and your choices. Remind you that you are safe, seen, and loved.

It is an honor to support and document your unique, empowering birth. Only you get to define what that looks like. ✨
