When I was little, I would be reading at least 6 books at once, at all times. I loved the way a character went from a stranger to a dear friend of mine that I knew everything about--

all I had to do was turn the pages. My obsession with words as a kid quickly turned into a passion for people. I fell in love at an early age with how humans interact with one another; their passions, what makes thei

r eyes light up, the things that make them ecstatic or nostalgic. It was only a matter of time until a camera found its way into my life. My love of storytelling evolved into telling stories through photographs, and I haven't looked back since.

Welcome back to Ali Miller Photography.

I want to say thank you to a few extremely important humans— without them this new chapter would have remained in the archives.

Gigi Morrison — the woman who drew every drawing, orchestrated colors, discovered every font and crafted each logo; I am in awe of your brain. You have an innate ability to take scattered, two dimensional ideas and turn them into moods and feelings and familiar landscapes. It is an honor to be your client, partner and friend.

Tom Wright — “thank you” will never be enough. Hours and hours of zoom calls, gut punch questions, introductions to brilliant artists. You changed how I compose the world, how I see color, how I view my work and radicalized my goals.
My loved ones know you as my mentor, “that one British guy”, the human who got me into Japanese magazines. To me you are all of those roles, but most of all you’re my friend. Thank you.

& to Duck— you kept me out of Cedar Rapids and continue to give us the most marvelous life. I love you. I love you. I love you.

She walked in the room where the photoshoot was happening, took a look around and asked,

“Where’s the set up? Lights and backdrops and what not?”

I stood there, absolutely gobsmacked for a moment before I realized SHE was talking to ME.

“Oh yes, hi Dolly, uh it’s me. Im Ali. I’m the whole set up actually”, nervously gesturing at my outdated camera and single lens.

She strolled over, gave me a squeeze on the shoulder and a wink,
“Well alright then honey, Miss Ali. Let’s get started”.

She was more than an icon, more than a legend. She was more than words could ever express. Rest easy Dolly, meeting you was the honor of my life🦋

We were told to want an epic life.

Adventurous job. Sprawling home. Michelin star dinners. Movie meet cute. Flowers every Wednesday. 6 figure wedding.

Jaw dropping. Breathtaking. Once in a lifetime. Epic.

I don’t think an “epic life” means what we were told it means.

Epic isn’t actually found in grand gestures or excess.

“Epic” lives in the small stuff; the mundane parts of our world that prove love exists.

It’s epic the bartender knows to keep the tab open. It’s epic splitting the G on the first try. It’s epic that his hand always finds its way into yours. It’s epic the fridge is covered in Polaroids that wouldn’t exist if you hadn’t met.

We were told to want an epic life; how extraordinary it is to realize you’ve already got one.

Tremendous thank you to Jess and Alonso for showing me their world, I love you both dearly 🤍

True or False: this exact part of this song is the most perfect soundtrack for these photos

Watching Katy twirl across the forest and checkered floor was like watching a little kid do their happy dance; pure joy. All I want is for her to wear it to the grocery store, cleaning her house, football games. The world deserves to see Katy in this dress as many times as humanely possible.

“When we saw the pines we knew. This was the place”.

They chose their venue with feeling, and after a day of immersing myself in their world I quickly realized this was a pattern for Katy and Robby.

If she could she would adopt every stray animal she found and he would learn how to build chicken coops if she asked.

His twin brother could’ve gone on for hours on Robby’s relentless work ethic and loyalty to those he loves.

Katy’s best friend told me “there really is no one like her.” She hugs hard, talks with her hands and when she looks at you? You feel seen.

Their families were animated, warm and had enough stories to last weeks around a campfire. The type of people you’d want to open up a bottle of w**e with and pour over childhood photo albums (did you know Robby spent some of his childhood living on a sailboat?).

An entire table was filled with regulars from the bar they met at in 2021, including the man who married them. After dinner coworkers drifted out back and I was hit with a wave of nostalgia. Restaurant kids? We’re are all the same; all we need is a liminal space for great conversation and a quick b**r. That’s where relationships are made.

They chose their venue with feeling because they built their world with heart. What a joy it was to bear witness to it all.

I used to start a timer.

“30 minutes of pulling weeds in the garden, then you can be done.”

30 minutes in 80% humidity. 30 minutes of sweating your god damn ass off. 30 minutes of mosquitoes and dirt and “why can’t the neighbor mow his lawn?” 30 minutes, then onto the next task.

Go. Go. Go.

My whole day was gloriously productive. Start the clock, pull the weeds, send the email, edit the photos, post the carousel.

Go. Go. Go.

“How can I be more efficient? How can I book more weddings? Should I post more?”

More. More. More. Faster. Faster. Faster.

A funny thing happens, though, when you forget to start a timer.

You slow down. You start to savor. You remember more. You begin seeing magic where there used to be mundanities.

Your emails still get sent. Your couples are happier because they had time to cement their memories before being tagged in an Instagram post. You didn’t need AI to edit your work or write your thoughts.

Your face still sweats. The weeds get pulled.

Slow. Slow. Slow.

This year I stopped trying to be so damn efficient. I stopped sending preview galleries to my couples. I stopped sharing my work on here immediately after the photos are taken. I wait, and wait, until i actually have something to say.

I started taking my camera with me everywhere. I started caring more about WHY I do this and how I can show up as the best version of myself.

The clock stopped. The art began.

Slow. Slow. Slow.

“The 4th of July. Red white and blue.
Blue. That was my first ever favorite color when I was little.
What’s the bluest blue I’ve ever seen in my life?
The sky in Montana at noon. Glacier National Park.
Wendy and Brian, god I miss them. How can I book a wedding in Florida? Wendy needs to teach me how to enjoy running. God I hate running.
We felt so small that day. So insignificant. The mountains and trees and bluffs and valleys swallowed us whole and I loved every second of feeling that tiny.
I wish we could go back. Id bring more film this time around.
I can’t believe skies like those even exist. And I stood under them. I mean it was just so blue. Blue. Blue.
Red white and blue.
The 4th of July”

It’s impossible to describe a persons aura to someone they’ve never met, so we’ve come up with phrases that are easy to digest and quick to imagine.

“Oh her? She’s such an old soul”
“That one is wise beyond their years”
“He’s just a child at heart, you know?”

You hear those words and instantly have a picture of who this person is, the effect they have on rooms they walk into, the mark they leave on those they leave behind.

Any documenter of people would agree it’s addictive, and impossible, to capture a persons soul through a single photo. We become absolutely obsessed with photographing whatever side of a person they reveal to us, knowing it is far from complete, because humans are more complicated than that.

When I met Carly, she wrapped me in a bear hug and filled my suitcase with homemade spices and homegrown honey. She spoke a million miles a minute, gliding from one conversation to the next. A little ball of energy that left each person a little more neon and a lot more inclined to dance.

Cameron, soft spoken with a booming laugh, knew more about bonsai trees than any gardening reddit page ever could. He wears his heart on his sleeve for those closest to him. One of those guys you want life advice from followed by a punny joke.

There are people who are catalysts; accelerating the energy in any given conversation or situation. But Carly and Cameron? They are the energy itself.

It was an absolute honor to watch them pour into every person and space they were a part of throughout their wedding weekend.
