Getting married has looked a little different than I thought it would. It is fun and exciting to do life with your best friend, but marriage also has a way of revealing deep wounds that we operate out of, and can provide a safe space for them to heal… if we choose to do so. It’s having someone who will both call you out and cheer you on. There’s no other relationship like it - it is sacred and special, and it is so worth documenting the different seasons of it. This is a part of why I created this branch of Alice Mae Photography.♥️

These two love birds are coming up on their two year anniversary, and this evening of curating a date night and photographing them was so magical.✨

You have time. You don’t need to push your limits as if you don’t.

American culture is particularly guilty of unhealthy hustle, and it causes many people to live in a constant state of both physical and mental stress. Prominent people in the medical industry warn about the risks of this - not only are you more susceptible to viruses and pathogens that get you sick, but in the long run it leads to ruining your heart, autoimmune disease, anxiety, depression and more.

I am a 110% go-getter the majority of the time. I thrive when I have a routine and get started on my to-do list early in the day. Growing up on farms and learning how to care for animals and plants, I developed a work ethic that most kids don’t develop until post high school/college.

Yesterday was not one of those go-getter days.

I woke up with my neck in pain. Not only that, but I realized how much my entire body was still recovering after a very physically straining few days, and my brain was lagging with it. I could feel that with the amount of stress my body had been under, it was extremely susceptible to sickness - I was on the verge.

I had one meeting, took care of a couple things, and decided my to-do list would wait. Pushing myself was going to lead to getting sick… it always has.

This morning I woke up so thankful that I chose to pause yesterday. Being “productive” would have wound up being a setback that would have led to me having to take more time off to recover from illness. In the past I’ve been guilty of ignoring the signs, and I’m proud of myself for not doing that this time.

If you walked into this week and into the new year with high standards and great expectations for yourself, but things aren’t going as planned…

You have time.

Take the day off to rest. Restructure your workflow. Revisit your list. Pick the two things that HAVE to get done, and let the rest wait.

You have time.

This is invaluable! A year end evaluation of your small business will show you areas of growth, as well as areas that may be costing you. It’s the best way to prepare for the upcoming year so that your business can profit in 2023!

2022 was my first official year of running a FULL TIME business… and it was amazing.🥹❤️

Doing my year end review a couple weeks ago was incredibly encouraging, and so insightful.

Like this post if you’ve already done a year end review, or are planning to do one!❤️

If you are running a photography business, self portraits are one of the BEST ways for you to 1. learn new things and challenge yourself, and 2. flex your creativity! This is my number one tip for anyone who is just beginning, or who feels stuck and uninspired.

Ideally, I like to do a self portrait session every month. However, there have been other aspects of my work that have taken priority more recently. In fact… until these photos, I hadn’t taken any portraits of myself SINCE JULY.😧 Very unusual for me!

If you want to keep learning and growing as a photographer, or simply want to make some space to let your creativity run wild, start scheduling a self-portrait session regularly!✨

I’ve been wanting to post from this shoot, and today is May Pat’s birthday and a special reason to do just that!

Mary Pat - you are someone to be reckoned with. You regard the presence of God in such a way that affects every person you engage with, because they encounter the presence of Jesus when they are with you. You are unabashedly you, and your freedom to be yourself encourages others to be themselves. You are so talented it’s ridiculous - your food is insane, your art is beautiful, your singing voice either feels like a warm hug or inspiring and uplifting. Your love for God, the Church and people is deeply beautiful and I crave for more people who bear the name Christian to love like you, because your standard is striving to love like Jesus. Thank you for your friendship. I’m so glad that I get to live life with a Mary Pat in it, because you are a joy and one of the most beautiful people I know. Happy Birthday, MP! ❤️🥳

If you’re working from home and struggling to jumpstart your work day, I have a few tips for you for tomorrow morning!

1. If you don’t already have a physical planner, get one. Physically writing things down holds me more accountable than any app or calendar on my phone ever does! The night before, write down the 2-3 things you absolutely HAVE to get done the next day. Check them off as you go. It makes your day feel much less daunting, and anything you get done in addition to those 2-3 tasks is a bonus!

Check out my blog for more tips to jumpstart your work day!

Cheers!✨

A tip for your holiday work week:

If you have a lot to get done before Thanksgiving, this is for you!

•Write down the top priority items you need to accomplish each day. Half of our battle is getting distracted by smaller things that don’t matter as much. Focus on the things that have deadlines, or make the most difference in your job.

•Give yourself a bare minimum of 30 mins without a phone/tv/computer before bed. Take some deep breaths and do some stretches. It’s extra helpful to have silence, as we are overstimulated by the end of the day.

•If you have a hard time quieting your mind, do a brain dump on a piece of paper or in a journal.

•Don’t count how many hours of sleep you’ll get when lying in bed. Instead, say aloud to yourself a few times when you need to get up. Our bodies natural clocks are better than we give them credit for! I still recommend an alarm though. 😂

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is my favorite movie. Many people believe it’s a love story, but I think that’s the secondary aspect of it. The movie depicts the journey of someone learning about the risk of vulnerability, and how a life lived in fear isn’t much of a life at all. By the end of the film Holly Golightly realizes how she has spent much of her life making choices from a place of fear, but is unhappy and knows she needs to do something differently. We also see fear based choices in Paul’s character, a writer no longer writing for fear of further rejection of his work. By the end, he has decided to risk writing once again. Not only that, but rather than further rejection, he experiences acceptance and praise for his work.

Audrey Hepburn has been an inspiration to me in many ways, and if she were still around, I would thank her for choosing to take on this role, and for beautifully portraying the struggle with vulnerability and fear we all experience.

Here are some photos from my birthday in NYC. The first, having breakfast at Tiffany’s in front of their flagship store. The second, standing in front of the bandshell in Central Park. Both iconic locations of where the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s was shot.

Cheers to 31, and continuing to learn to not live and choose from a place of fear, but rather, a place of faith and hope.✨
