is a special place. It’s like a regional theatre program, drawing some of the best kids from all around. Every senior I talked to was grateful to be there, and expressed the joy in putting in the work to put on the best show they could.

Like so many others, the spirit of the lives in so many of these kids. It’s about friendship, growth, finding your people, finding yourself, and striving for excellence. I just wish I had more time to feature these incredible kids individually, as June 7 is coming up quick!

Memorial was one of the first schools I visited in February when I decided I wanted to feature seniors in musicals being considered for the . Instead of interviewing a few individuals, I found myself in a room with every senior involved with the show. And holy schnikes did this group represent what the Jerry’s is all about — working your hardest to be your best, knowing that that is enough.

No offense to any other production, but this URINETOWN was STUNNING! The production design, choreography, direction, costumes — this was as professional a show that I have seen.

And to the schools who have never produced URINETOWN (because of the title or otherwise), you are doing yourself and your school community a huge disservice! The show is hilarious and heartwarming, and every ensemble member contributes to it. Put this show in your radar for next season!!!

Newsies is one of my favorite musicals. As a father of three boys, I have been drawn to the character of the young men in this story. Though flawed, they stand by one another, they stand up for something they believe in, they open their hearts and listen to wisdom, they grow, and they dance — my goodness do they dance!!

I’m not sure if tickets are still available for their closing weekend, but SEE THIS SHOW IF YOU CAN! Everything about this production is spectacular, and the young actors will undoubtedly be on stages for years and decades to come.

Ann is smart, well spoken, and her kind spirit was evident in talking with her. She was so much fun to watch on stage. And no matter who receives awards, the attend the Jerry Awards ceremonies each year, which, to me, embodies the spirit of the program!

THE JERRY AWARDS are just one month away! And in anticipation, I will be making posts like this one throughout the month, featuring seniors I have gotten to know through the program. Some I have known for years, and others I just met. But one thing is for certain, these kids are filled with joy and love and hope and TALENT! I am so lucky to do what I do and am thankful to all the schools that invited me to their shows to meet and photograph some of their seniors. All photos by me unless otherwise noted.

The seniors of performed emotional and powerful solos this past weekend. Luke sang “Alive” by Sia, Ethan sang “Your Song” by Elton John, Evy killed it with Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide”, and Sierra introduced me to a song I didn’t know, “Come On Up to the House,” a Tom Waits cover by Sarah Jarosz.
