Good Mama! I was looking at all the seeds hanging on my Redbud tree this year when I noticed one of its leaves were folded over. I thought it might be one of our native Redbud Leaffolders since Redbuds are their only host plant and I've seen them on my Redbuds in the past (they've never damaged the trees.) I was surprised to find this female Ground Crab Spider (Xysticus sp) instead, her eight eyes looking at me as she rushed to protect her babies (in the egg sac) from me. This is a small, impressive spider that's harmless to humans and not aggressive. They'd sooner run and hide from us. I took a photo of her, then let her and her babies be. They're great to have in your garden as they protect it from pests. There are many types of Ground Crab Spiders, with various colors and patterns. They not only resemble crabs, but they can also walk sideways, just as crabs do. How cool is that!

"Do I Scare You?" I have often heard that some Lepidoptera have eyespots on their wings to scare off predators. I never fully appreciated it until I saw this one eclosing. This is a female Promethea Moth that has just emerged from her cocoon. She is totally vulnerable at this stage because she has to climb up something vertical and hang from it as she pumps the fluid (hemolymph) from her swollen abdomen to her tiny, limp wings until the fluid fills the wings out completely. And then she has to stay there until the wings harden. She can't fly until they do. This process can take hours. In this photo, she is still pumping the fluid to her limp wings that do resemble a scary face, which a predator might not want to mess with.

Juvenal's Duskywing. This is one of several types of Duskywings in Michigan. This type of butterfly is called a spread-wing skipper. The ends of skippers' antennae are hooked, instead of clubbed or feathered. They quickly "skip" from one spot to another and briefly rest with with their wings spread out before skipping to the next spot in an erratic way, which can make them a challenge to photograph. Juvenal's Duskywings are quite common in the eastern US and Canada. They tend to live near the edges of forests with oaks because oaks are the host plant for their caterpillars. (Oaks are a crucial food source for so many animals.) They are one of the caterpillars that folds leaves around themselves, where they hide during the day, in an effort to protect themselves from hungry birds and other animals.

Male Wild Turkey in Golden Ragwort Field. This was in a wetter area, which is great for this important native plant that can grow in sun or shade. As an early bloomer, it is vital for bees that come out in early spring. It's also a host plant for many types of Lepidoptera and sure brightens a field.

Osprey With Fish. These magnificent raptors almost went extinct when DDT was used to get rid of mosquitoes. When the pesticide was finally banned in 1972, Osprey made a comeback in states like Michigan. These are large birds, with a 5 to 6 foot wingspan. Females are larger than males, which is often the case with raptors. Osprey can be found living near water, as 99% of their diet is fish. They like to build their nests on platforms, including cell phone towers (we have several such nests around here.) One of their biggest rivals is the Bald Eagle that also nests near water. Fights occur. Bald Eagles are larger than Osprey and eat various things, including carrion, and they're known to steal fish, eggs, and chicks from Osprey. Osprey are more agile and faster than Bald Eagles, so they can protect their food and nests by mobbing and harassing Bald Eagles. Hopefully their numbers will also increase in states where they're still threatened or endangered.
