I waited for a greenhead portrait. He gave me the back of his head and a wing stretch. 😂

Still took the shot. Those blue feathers earned their spot.

Photographers, how often does your subject face the wrong way?

I don’t photograph geese very often, but this scene made me stop.

A group of local geese dropped in with their wings cupped, and that sky behind them completely changed the shot. The warm light, layered clouds, and those dark silhouettes coming straight toward me made it too good to pass up.

Sometimes the photograph you weren’t looking for ends up being the one you’re glad you took.

Which one are you picking, 1 or 2?

Two clicks of the shutter. Purple in the first frame, blue in the next. I went out looking for mallards and came home comparing feathers.

That wing patch is called the speculum. Its iridescent feathers have tiny structures that reflect light differently as the angle changes. A small movement of the wing can shift the color you see from purple to blue, even on a cloudy day.

Which gets your vote, purple or blue?

Most days, the green head gets all the attention. Today, those wings deserve it.

A drake mallard stretching out, with every feather and flying droplet caught in the frame. That blue patch might be my favorite part of the whole shot.

What caught your eye first?

More green and a lot more ducks around. Getting down to water level changes the whole photo. Cleaner backgrounds, feather detail, and a different view of these mallards.

Which portrait is your favorite: the drake looking straight at me or the hen?

Hard to drive past an old barn like this without stopping to snag a photo. Weathered boards, a worn tin roof, and a sky that made it worth pulling over.

Anyone else always looking for old barns on a backroad drive?

Not wildlife! But what an experience my brother n law led the flyover at the Mississippi State versus Alabama game, and this is what I captured. Rotate for full screen! NAS Meridian
