“We return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life, — no disgrace, no calamity, (leaving me my eyes,) which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare ground, — my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite spaces, — all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eye-ball; I am nothing; I see all.”

We foraged for sumac today! It’s so great to find what many consider a w**d or worse (this isn’t poison sumac... that’s small and has white berries) and use it as part of our cooking. It’s a spice used in a lot of Native American and Middle Eastern cooking: a tart, lemony flavor.

To process, we removed all the berries from the clusters. Then we ran it through the food processor for a few minutes, which helped separate the hard seed from the tart pulp we’re looking to save.

After that, we put it through a mesh sieve to separate out the pulp and the seeds (we really needed a slightly less-fine sieve.)

Finally, we put the remaining pulp on a sheet tray and are putting into a 145° oven for a few hours to dry it out.

Really excited to try the final product in a dry rub or fattoush salad!

I got exceedingly lucky with this shot.

We were all lying out on the front yard, well-passed bedtime, gazing up at stars and marveling at how we won't be alive the next time this particular comet makes its way to our part of the solar system.

I set up my camera to take a photo, and just before I snapped a photo, the International Space Station passed in the sky, just below the Neowise comet.

Wow.
