My favorite photographs elicit an emotion - ahh or yikes, either one is good, ha - or even tell a story. When I first moved here I took a day trip to the Badlands and wandered around with the camera.
If you know me at all you won't be surprised to learn that I was way more interested in photographing the surrounding areas - parking lots, a closed campground, a tiny town on the border of the national park - than I was the gorgeous landscape of the park itself.
This is one of my favorites from that day, simply because it raises questions. Where are the people who own the van? (I walked around looking for them and they were nowhere.) Are they living in it? Why leave it wide open? And couldn't they have parked within the lines? (That's a joke. But, seriously, why not.)
It looks like the driver zoomed in, parked a bit askew, threw open the sliding door, and ran. Escaping? Running toward something he or she saw? I don't know, but I like to think about it and wonder.
