The light in here does something to me.
They didn’t need much direction. Just a room that felt like it was made for them — and two weeks until it’s real.

“We are all stardust”

I haven’t posted in a long time because at the end of April, I went down to check on my dad at his home, only to have my absolute worst fears realized. My father struggled his entire life with depression, and April 19th, he succumbed to his mental illness.

Dealing with the trauma and loss is beyond comprehension and explanation, and far from the genuinely happy moments I capture every wedding, every photography session.

It’s taking me a bit longer to function “as normal” but photography and my clients bring me so much happiness. I remember my dad on my wedding day, smiling the biggest smile I had ever seen. Being with me and watching his three grandchildren grow brought him so much joy. If I can bring even an ounce of that to the people I photograph, I know there’s hope.

If you are struggling with mental health and depression, so many people care about you. More than you will ever know unless you talk about it.

I truly believe my dad held on long past his intentional end, hanging on as hard as he could to grip happiness. He found it in his family and that kept him going. I realize we could only do so much though and this is an illness that needs to be talked about openly.

Sending love to all those who have walked this path, and hope to those who can find the strength to overcome it, even if it’s one year longer, two years longer… ten. years. longer.

Me and my husband at Keanae Arboretum on the Road to Hana. Turns out the hippie in me never needed much convincing — these rainbow eucalyptus trees will do that to you. Earth Day isn’t a day for me, it’s a baseline.

Some places remind you that you are very small, and the planet is very old. That’s exactly the point. 🌿

Happy Earth Day.
