On the Weight of the Work

Not every frame is a wedding. Not every shoot ends in champagne and golden hour.

Editorial and documentary photography carries a different obligation, to show what's actually there, not just what's easy to look at. Sometimes that's a bride at the altar. Sometimes it's a man hunched over a trash can on a St. Augustine sidewalk, cigarette burning down between his fingers, head in his hands, two blocks from tourists taking pictures of cobblestone streets.

That photo is part of SEEN, a black and white series documenting unhoused individuals across the southern United States. It isn't comfortable work. It isn't meant to be. But it's real, and real life doesn't stop being worth photographing just because it's hard to look at.

This is the part of the craft that doesn't get talked about as much, the responsibility that comes with a camera. Not every story is light. Some are raw. Some are quiet and difficult and easy to walk past. The job, as I see it, is to not walk past them.

That's editorial work. That's documentary work. That's the job.

We were honored to both assist the Marion Library in receiving the grant for renovations, and documenting the ground breaking ceremony. A special thank you to all who have dedicated time to the betterment of our community and we look forward to documenting the progress of the new construction!

The Order
There's a moment before the plate arrives, before the check is settled.

A cafe in Mexico. Mid-morning light. A waiter, mid-motion, unaware of the lens. Pen against pad. Leaning to the side nonchalant, the kind of quiet competence that doesn't perform for anyone.

This is the part of travel photography I chase, not the postcard, but the pulse underneath it. The work that happens while no one's watching.
