A Tornado Watch is in effect until 8:00 PM CST for parts of central and southern Illinois and nearby areas.

A strong thunderstorm is moving east at 45 mph across parts of southwestern Will, southern Grundy, and west-central Kankakee counties through 3:30 PM. Radar Update (1:20 PM)

Showers and thunderstorms are forming along a cold front in the circled area and will shift eastward this afternoon. The main severe threat remains south of I-80 across central Illinois, but a strong storm could sneak up the I-80 corridor, so I’ll be watching trends closely.

⚠️ Severe Weather Update – Sunday (Dec 28)

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded tornado probabilities to 5% across east-central Illinois, including Kankakee, and much of west-central Indiana. While the tornado risk remains low, it is not zero this afternoon and evening.

Timing:
• The primary severe weather window is expected this afternoon into early evening, roughly 12 PM – 6 PM,

The main severe weather threat will stay south of I-80, where damaging straight-line winds are the primary concern with stronger storms.

North of I-80, severe weather is less likely. However, localized flooding may become an issue due to periods of steady rainfall and saturated ground.

I’ll continue to closely monitor updates from the SPC and NWS and will share any changes as trends become clearer. Stay weather-aware today.

As I mentioned earlier this morning, I was watching a northward shift in the latest model trends. Now, it seems the Storm Prediction Center agrees.

The marginal risk for severe storms has been expanded northward to include Kankakee and the surrounding areas including far southern Will County into northwest Indiana. Stay tuned for more updates!
