The way it just rubs its pec fin on the buoy on the last pass, too cool. I'll often watch the Sharks investigate objects with their dorsal fin or pec fins. It's not always the nose or mouth.

Some recent shots of everyone's favorite shark species. White sharks are my favorite of course. Appropriately named for their beautiful white bellies (visible from underneath in the second photo). Which image is your favorite from this collection?

A pod of orcas takes down a humpback whale.

Filming nature can sometimes put you in a state of happiness, amazement, shock, and incredible sadness all at once. This scene was one of the most emotionally torn pieces of natural history I've captured. I love orcas, I love humpbacks. Nature has to take it's course, and that is the reality.
-
The incredible intelligence of the orcas was on full display when this happened. They successfully separated a juvenile humpback from its mother and ate the tongue out. While the brutality of nature is sometimes hard to witness, the two calves in the pod also gained not only vital survival and hunting knowledge but a much needed meal.
-
The deceased whale also provided food for several sharks that traveled alongside the orcas eating scraps. Yes, sharks traveled right alongside.

Sometimes you get a trifecta of different species all doing their own thing. In this case, a pod of dolphins cruises between surfers and a great white.

Check out my latest YouTube video, released today, to see a welcome great white surprise I found earlier this week. Link in bio.

While many folks will say dolphins outmatch great whites, I've not only filmed a dolphin get eaten by great whites but there are countless scientific records of dolphins in the belly of white sharks.
-
If anything, a clip like this shows that a white shark can indeed sneak up on dolphins. Not only can a great white's burst of speed overpower a dolphin, but in this clip, if this shark had chosen to attack, it was well within striking distance. Of note, you'll notice a baitball nearby, which through my observations is not a coincidence. I think it's part of the strategy I've seen from sharks. They tend to sneak up on marine mammals preoccupied with bait. It's absolutely interesting to see time and time again.

I captured this while filming Air Jaws for Shark Week . Stay tuned to see the full episode during Shark Week beginning July 26th.
-
I was tasked with filming white sharks breaching naturally in California but along the way captured scenes like this.

Stay tuned!

A white shark cruises by one of CSULB Shark Lab real time receivers off the Southern California coast. The real time receivers are a vital part of understanding the white sharks of Southern California.

Orcas cruising the blue waters of the Sea of Cortez never get old. I was lucky enough to be in their presence last week during my time with my friends and . No matter how many times I'm near them, regardless of where in the world, it's magical.
