The Summer Before Senior Year
There were bikes leaning in the driveway,
bare feet on the pavement,
sun-faded hair and scraped-up knees,
and nowhere we had to be.
Glass Coke bottles sweating in the summer heat,
windows down,
a favorite song playing too loud,
the kind of song we’ll hear years from now
and somehow be seventeen again.
We stayed out until the porch lights came on,
laughed until our stomachs hurt,
drove nowhere just to keep driving,
and made ordinary days
feel like something worth remembering.
We jumped off the dock at sunset,
chased fireflies after dark,
took pictures on disposable cameras
we wouldn’t see until the film was developed,
never knowing we were capturing
the last summer before everything changed.
Because this is the summer
between who we were
and who we’re becoming.
One last summer of being kids
without quite realizing it.
Before senior pictures.
Before college applications.
Before goodbyes.
Before everyone starts going
in different directions.
So let the music play.
Stay out a little later.
Take the long way home.
Save the blurry pictures.
Write your names on the dock.
Because someday,
when the years have passed
and the memories feel a little fuzzy,
you’ll look back and realize—
this was it.
The bikes.
The lake.
The laughter.
The late nights.
The best friends.
The summer before senior year.
The summer you didn’t know
you’d spend the rest of your life
missing.
