A glimpse of the wild side of the Outer Banks. These Spanish mustang descendants roam freely among the dunes of Carova's 4x4 beach, grazing peacefully against a backdrop of sea oats, sand, and endless sky. Watching them wander through the landscape was one of my favorite moments from summer break. A beautiful reminder that nature still writes some of the best stories. 🐎✨

A little behind-the-scenes look at what I've been working on...

As Lynchburg Pawtraits transitions to Kindred Stories Photography, one thing became very clear to me: I wasn't ready to let go of Pawtraits. Pets and their people are still at the heart of everything I do, and always will be.

That's why the new website is organized into two collections:

📖 The Kindred Collections celebrate the people, pets, relationships, and moments that make up your story.
🐾 The Pawtrait Collections remain dedicated to our animal companions, with specialty sessions for puppies, rescue stories, and legacy/end-of-life photography.

Kindred Stories Photography gives me room to tell more stories while honoring where it all began. Pawtraits didn't disappear—it simply found its place within a larger story.

Some bonds are so special that time can never erase them.

On World Pet Memorial Day, I'm remembering Maddie and Ember. Different species, different personalities, but somehow always together. Whether sharing a couch, a sunny spot, or simply each other's presence, they filled our home with comfort, laughter, and unconditional love.

As we honor the pets who left paw prints on our hearts, I'm grateful for the memories, adventures, and love they gave so freely. Every life has a story, and every chapter deserves to be remembered. Maddie and Ember will always be part of mine.

If you'd like, I'd love to hear about the pet you're remembering today. 💖🐾

Day 2 was a little brighter than yesterday.

Teddy still took some time to come out from hiding, but he made a big baby step today. He ventured from his corners of the patio and yard to the steps and eventually came to sit with me at the edge of the water. It was so nice to see him feeling a little more comfortable and confident.

Bailey spent more time hanging out on the pool stairs in the water. He still seemed a little unsure at times, but definitely happier than he was yesterday.

The highlight of the afternoon was when a bird caught Bailey's attention, followed by a deer that wandered close to the fence. Suddenly both boys were very interested in what was happening outside the yard and looked ready to make a new friend.

It's been fun watching them settle in and gain a little more confidence each day. 💙🐾

Today was our first afternoon in the pool without Maddie.

Ryan and I knew it would be hard, but we weren't prepared for how different it would feel.

When Maddie was here, pool days had a rhythm to them. She was always part of the fun. She loved swimming after her Kong training dummies, basketball, and chasing the football across the water in the game we called "Maddie in the Middle." Some of my favorite summer memories are of her happily paddling back and forth, completely in her element. The pool was one of her happy places, and today it felt impossible not to notice she wasn't there.

This was the only picture I managed to get of Bailey and Teddy together before they went their separate ways. Teddy spent most of the afternoon hanging out in the corner of the patio. It was his first time being out with us while we were in the pool since he was just a tiny puppy. He seemed so unsure.

Bailey started out the way he usually does. He got in the pool for a little while, then climbed out. Instead of settling in and relaxing, he seemed to withdraw. He found a spot away from us and just watched.

Bailey has the most soulful eyes, and this afternoon they looked heartbreakingly sad. The whole afternoon felt quieter and different. There was an emptiness around the pool that was impossible to ignore; a place where Maddie should have been.

Then a butterfly appeared and lingered nearby.

It stayed with us for quite a while, and for a moment it felt like Maddie had found a way to be there with us. Maybe it was her way of reminding us that she was still close.

For a little while, she didn't feel quite so far away.

We missed you today, sweet girl! 💖🦋🌈

I’m incredibly honored to be featured by The Tilly Project as one of their affiliate photographers. 💖

This organization and this work are deeply personal to me. My own pets, Ember and Maddie, are the reason I joined The Tilly Project and the reason Lynchburg Pawtraits exists in the first place.

We were fortunate to have professional photos taken with Maddie before she passed, and those images quickly became some of our most treasured possessions. Experiencing firsthand how meaningful those memories are is what made me want to provide the same gift to other families during such a difficult time.

Being able to preserve these memories for people with the pets they love most is truly such an honor. I’m so grateful to The Tilly Project for allowing me to be part of their affiliate photographer community and the meaningful work they do for pet families. 🐾
