Yes, this coastal brown bear was close, very close. Luckily it had a fresh salmon dinner on its mind and pretty much ignored the we humans with our cameras. The photo was made on last year's Southeast Alaska tour near Pack Creek, Admiralty Island. I've been doing these photo trips since 1999 and each year amazes me. We use a 55-foot boat for our sleeping/eating base and get to beautiful spots few visitors ever get to see. We visit the Ice Kingdom and look for the humpback whales and orcas that spend the summer feasting here. I invite you to join me for this August's adventure. Last call for my Point Reyes photo workshop. I do this June 21-23 workshop in conjunction with the Point Reyes Field Institute, and we're in the heart of some of the most beautiful coastline in North America. But there are little surprises, too, like this abandoned farmhouse near Drakes Bay. It reminds me of an Andrew Wyeth painting, all muted grays and browns.
