90 minutes outside Barcelona, I drove into a medieval village of fewer than 20 people to photograph David Sandoval, a stranger who left life making wooden surfboards to honour a promise to his late father. Alone in rural Spain, he channelled his passion into an obsession with bespoke handmade woodwork, and built a beautiful business doing what he loves. He fed me homemade soup, offered me a bed, and sent me on my way with one more story worth telling.

If you haven’t been to a Semi Permanent, I insist that you do. I’ve been to a bunch and you come out being so inspired that it nearly makes your head explode.

So I’ve been taking portraits of Murray for years now. He’s become a great friend and when he visited LA, we motored up to Santa Barbara in my old pickup truck to get some waves.
And now that I’m back in Aus, he wanted me to collaborate with him and .
As the cosmos would have it, I was working a bit with Outerknown in LA. I loved surfing and having a chat with the OK founder and legend John Moore .

Murray and I were so busy by the end of last year that we had to shoot on Christmas Eve. I met him at his place in Tamarama, we are some croissants and he started to model for me. Ha. We documented his typical commute to the office. @ Sydney, Australia

On this particular day, the team woke up on the west coast of Tasmania. We ate breakfast and jumped in our cars. 6.5 hours later, we hit the end of the road on the East Coast.

2pm, still had not eaten much since breakfast. We went out for a location scout for the shoot the following morning. While we were there, we realised that the weather was perfect, the clouds and wind were going to pick up over night. We quickly decided that we were going to try to shoot as much as we could before the light disappeared. We had 3 hours, close to 30 outfits and I was not only shooting stills, but video as well as some analog film shots.

One whole pack of natural confectionary gummies to myself and we were off. Jumping from rock to rock, cameras shooting this way, clothing flying that way, my brain was three shots ahead of what we were working on. Click, click, click... then the sun dipped below the mountains in the distance and it was all over.

We all cheered. We did it. We shot the whole campaign in 3 hours. It was all a blur. The only memory I have of it is looking back on the shots. And to be quite honest, I really love them.
Couldn’t have done it without the team.
