A study found that people who viewed climate data in the form of an artwork were less likely to lean on their preconceived notions.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

“By Degrees: Art and Our Changing Ecology” opens today, April 15, 6:30-9pm at the Huntington Beach Art Center. As an artist, I believe it's no longer enough to create work revealing the consequences of climate change. Everyone knows our glaciers are melting. Future conversations need to include specific and actionable information about what we, as individuals, can do to make a difference.

While in Antarctica, a biologist made me aware of the massive-scale commercial overfishing of tiny crustaceans that are the basis of arctic food chains. Recent interest in Omega-3 dietary supplements has fueled an international industry that harvests krill and other arctic crustaceans to create fish oils. Many consumers are unaware of the environmental cost of their purchases, and that plant-derived Omega-3 supplements are widely availability.

Barbara Boissevain's upcoming photography monograph "Salt of the Earth" will to be published by Kehrer Verlag. Barbara and I met last summer in France, where we were both exhibiting work at Les Rencontres de la photographie, Arles. Happy to support this fine project and encourage my friends to consider doing the same.

Studying this fascinating book, a gift from Art Critic Shana Nys Dambrot. Uncanny similarities between Norwegian and American landscape photography c1860-1910. Both countries were experiencing strong nationalist movements, rapid industrialization, and expansion into remote areas newly accessible by railroads. Landscape photography became a powerful marker for national identity, depicting breathtaking wilderness ripe for entrepreneurial domination. The pious reverence for nature and outsized capitalist ambitions seem completely at cross purposes, as always.

An exhibition of the same name co-curated by authors Shannon Egan and Marthe Tolnes Fjellestad is on view at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle, WA through Nov 27. Wish I could see this outstanding work in person!

VALENTINO SUITE – ALEXANDRIA HOTEL

QUESTION: I captured this image on film and want to print it directly from the negative. Turns out that’s more challenging than I thought, with all the labs I used to frequent now closed. The Icon, Los Angeles doesn't print directly from 35mm color negatives, but drum scans them for digital printing. Does anyone have recent experience with a local lab that still does traditional color printing⁉️

Like all the images in my window series, this is a single exposure (not composited). For me, the wire, the horizon, and that tiny cloud are what hold your attention. When you see an actual print, there’s also plenty to explore in the foreground. You can do that at Von Lintel Gallery in Los Angeles. Images from the portfolio “It’s a Mess Without You” are also currently on view at Galerie Huit Arles in Southern France.

New piece by Peter Frank on the "Dreams in Deixis" exhibition at Tufenkian Fine Arts. I've always been fascinated by the confluence of art and dreaming! "The artwork comprising 'Dreams in Deixis' conflates the raw and the sensuous with the eccentric and fantastical, the elusive and illusory with the coarse and abject."💭

Perchance to Dream: Change in Deixis  By Peter Frank Change is a – perhaps the – fundament of life. Nothing stays the same. Unless we unlock our imaginations and point them to the stars, however, we miss not only the changes but the very chance to make change. Through art, metamorphosis can be...

ALL IS NOT BLACK AND WHITE

The magnificent exhibition "Ode to Nature: Early American Hand-Painted Landscape Photography from the collection of Fredric Havens" is on view Saturdays and Sundays only 10a-3p thru Mar 27. The conversation between painting and photography is long and ongoing. I love that these photoshop-like interventions were primarily employed to make the images look *more* realistic. 👀

Arnold Newman: "It's all part of the whole, like a three-legged stool. You kick out one leg and the whole collapses. In other words: Visual ideas combined with technolgy compined with personal interpretation equals photography. Each must hold its own ; if it doesn't, the thing collapses."

"JFK Funeral Train" at Peter Fetterman Gallery and in The Village Voice.

If you live near Los Angeles, do see this potent work by photojournalist Paul Fusco, so salient today on the brink of America's Birthday. Art Critic Shana Nys Dambrot reflects on how we are united as a nation and how we remain divided; on what has changed, and the problems that endure more than 50 years later.

https://www.villagevoice.com/2021/07/02/paul-fuscos-rfk-funeral-train-is-a-portrait-of-america/

Fusco shot for the entire eight hours it took for the train to make the usually four-hour journey. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the tracks, in huge crowds, small groups, and alone.
