It's been a long time! Lots of life changes and I've been super busy. But don't worry! I'm still birding! And I have loads of photos to catch you up once I get the chance to buckle down and finish editing 😅

In the meantime, here's some photos of Wild Turkeys and a Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon type) from Sequoia National Park. Enjoy!

The Killdeer is named for its shrill call -- you usually hear them before you see them. They're known for their "broken wing" display to lure predators away from their nests -- so if you see one acting like it's injured, watch your step! A nest may be nearby.

The Northern Shoveler has quite an interesting bill shape! It also has the largest bill of any North American duck (2.5 inches long, with over 100 fine, combtooth-like projections [called lamellae] along the sides to filter through water as they feed)!

Been looking for this little stunner for months! The Vermilion Flycatcher is a gorgeous, small flycatcher that ranges from the southwest United States to Chile, but stragglers have been found as far as Maryland, Minnesota, and British Colombia. The genus name "pyrocephalus" means "fire-headed."

It may be a little late for Halloween, but this bird can be spooky every day.

I present to you: the Loggerhead Shrike!

Nicknamed the "butcher bird," this masked bandit has a reputation for its gruesome methods of handling its prey. Loggerhead Shrikes impale their meals on thorns, barbed wire, etc, to save for later! That's not all -- their prey doesn't just consist of bugs, lizards, and small mammals, but includes other songbirds as well!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

LOOKIT! Omg, y'all. This little guy! SO tiny!

The Snowy Plover is North America's smallest plover and is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Fun facts: when born, baby Snowy Plovers are about the size of a thumb, but their legs are already as large as they'll be in adulthood. They leave the nest within about three hours of hatching. They can fly at about a month old.

Adorable fact: they catch kelp flies by running through clouds of them with an open mouth 🥹
