When I first moved to LA I lived a block from the water in Manhattan Beach. I went in all the time but was never a proper surfer — just someone who needed to be near the ocean, which I've since understood is its own kind of devotion. I always loved photographing in the water - pictured here is who is an amazing singer — check out her songs.

-

Separate thought here: Now that I'm a dad of a baby who is already, clearly, a water person, the ocean looks different to me. I find myself wondering what it will mean to him. Whether he'll surf. Whether he'll have the relationship with it I never quite did.

The water here is complicated right now. The Palisades fire left things in it that don't belong there, and the answer to when it's truly safe again is one nobody has cleanly. It asks something of you. Forces you to renew your belief in the world — to look at your kid reaching for the waves and choose, deliberately, to imagine his future in it.

I'm working on that.

Ryan and Ace are magic together. 🪄

Years earlier I went to Stanford to give a talk and came home with a friend.

ryan reached out after he graduated, we worked together on multiple projects, and eventually I asked if he’d be part of something I’d been building called The Best Friends Project. He brought his best friend ace the storyteller 🪄

Los Angeles is a city of hard lines. Right angles, white walls, telephone poles, stop signs, parking meters — the geometry is relentless.

Charlotte Taschen, who holds a black belt in Taekwondo (among her many talents), walked onto a street corner in the Arts District and bent every single one of them.

This shot was for Frankfurter Allgemeine Magazin — an article written by Esma Annemon Dil — who introduced us. That’s how the creative community here works. Someone makes an introduction, and suddenly the city gets a little brighter.

One of my earliest inspirations was Henri Cartier-Bresson. These images look nothing like his work — no grainy film, no Paris streets, no anonymous strangers caught mid-stride.

Cartier-Bresson is famous for the decisive moment. The idea that there is one instant where everything aligns — the geometry, the light, the feeling — and then it's gone. You either got it or you didn't.

That's what I'm chasing in those 90 seconds with talent. The set is controlled. The light is set. And then someone walks in and there's a moment, usually brief, usually unexpected, where they stop performing and just exist in front of the lens. That's it. That's the frame I want.

It has nothing to do with the formality of a portrait session and everything to do with what happens between the poses. I've been hunting that moment since I first picked up a camera. The only difference now is the tunnel is blue and the letters behind them say Running Point.

Red carpets are relentless. And I love them.

The noise, the pressure, the choreography — and the fact that everything has been building for months and then suddenly you have 90 seconds with Kate Hudson or Mindy Kaling and that's it. That's your window. Because when they walk in, everything else falls away. The only thing that matters is reading the person in front of me in real time. Are they high energy, loose, ready to play? More internal, more serious? And then there's the character — who are they on the show, and how much of that is actually them? That blend is different for every person and I have about ten seconds to figure it out before I start shooting.

Getting that right — getting the image — that's what lights me up.

There is nothing quite like walking up to the Egyptian Theatre the morning of a shoot and seeing something imagined come into existence.

and Netflix came to us with an idea. Domenica turned it into a design working with Real Fake Rooms to build it. Air Productions coordinated it all, while Bespoke Boheme brought the entire evening to life around the set.

These pics are the before. The construction. The sweat. The empty set.

Then as the sun set, the talent arrives, and my job begins in earnest. Time to get the image.

Heading into Memorial Day Weekend with this on my mind.
One of the things I love most about this job is that you make new friends. People who surprise you with their knowledge and their talent and their generosity. Getting to spend time in Big Bend and on the Gulf Coast in Corpus Christi with and — learning about a place from people who actually know it — that's a job I dreamed about as a kid flipping through National Geographic magazines in high school.
There's always more to learn. More river to get out on. More horses to get on. More open water to find your footing on. The moment you think you know everything is the moment the work gets smaller.
This one made me bigger.

There are more backyard tennis courts in Los Angeles than you'd think.

We spent a few hours on one of them with Taylor Fritz, a rack of BOSS wardrobe, Domenica's flowers, and a ceramic tiger she found god knows where. (Okay, it was a prop house).

My friend and creative director brought the vision as he always does!

Dear John's restaurant in Culver City provided the booth.

One of the best players in the world. One very menacing tiger. A perfect afternoon for

Becoming a dad changed how I see everything I've ever photographed.

I made these images of artist Mike Kalish and his son on the rocks in Malibu years before I had a child of my own. I thought I understood what I was capturing. I saw part of it, but there's so much more there that I can now see.

The way his son mirrors his dad's moves without thinking about it. The joy of a successful skip. The stillness that follows for a brief moment as the rocks disappear below the water and the hurried excitement to stop the waves from crashing over their feet.

This is the threshold I'm always chasing. The moments that will never be exactly this way again.
