Went for a walk at dawn, and it was pretty apocalyptic.... The smell of smoke was pretty strong, and there was no power, so it was even darker than normal. A lot of wind damage (stop sign on our corner was blown down, and a tree was uprooted and fell on a car).

The wind was still insane, alternating between gusts and calm. The smoke was thickest to the southeast, where the sun was rising, lending a hellish orange glow to the sky. To the northwest, there was a large clearing in the smoke, so pure white light was coming from that direction, and the combination made everything so surreal.

We just received an evacuation alert - first ever in my 30+ years here: I'm in Los Feliz. Friends lost their home in the palisades.

I'm just grateful Biden is still president because who knows what sort of extortion the incoming guy would exert on California in exchange for federal help.

Dawn arrives shrouded in a shawl of fog, enveloping a majestic landscape in ephemeral mystery. What can possibly await us in this weather? Knowing that Iceland never disappoints, we venture forth with a healthy sense of adventure. And indeed, we are not disappointed. The fog lifts, the drizzle abates, and wonders come into focus: abandoned farms, overgrown turf houses, tattered greenhouses, magnificent landscapes. And to keep us going into the evening, the never-dying hope of an aurora sighting.

Enjoy the camaraderie of small group touring, sharing the day's adventures and images, with the anticipation of tomorrow's experiences.

Happy New Year, everyone!

It's been quiet on this page for a while because I've been busily planning my next "Forgotten Iceland Tour", this time to the Northwest area, in partnership with . Dates are March 24 through March 29, 2025.

Please check it out, and hopefully, you'll be able to join me and a handful of other adventurous photographers. As with the last tour, the focus is on abandoned locations and night photography, with several landscape opportunities and other activities thrown in.

I have once again been asked to do a calendar for Oscar's Place, a donkey rescue and sanctuary that I support. It is an honor to do this work, and I'm forever grateful to Ron King and his amazing staff.
