Huge thanks to for the April cover!

The Story Behind The Cover

I was hovering in about three feet of water photographing a Discover Scuba course that my mother-in-law was in through Catalina Divers Supply, when I noticed a group of calico bass, garibaldi, and perch staring at their reflections in my dome port. At first, I did not think much of it because this is pretty standard at Casino Point. The fish usually swim over to inspect the new arrival, decide you are not particularly interesting, and then move on with their lives. This time though, they didn’t move on as fast as they normally would. Some circled. Some hovered. Some just stared. It seemed like some of them had formed a committee.

One calico in particular, the one on the cover, kept pushing forward with this oddly confrontational energy. It was giving main character vibes. I knew almost immediately that this fish was going to be my subject. The only problem was that I was not there to do a fish portrait session. I was supposed to be photographing the experience of my mother-in-law doing her first scuba dive. At some point, I can only assume the fish got briefed on my actual assignment and decided to interfere for their own entertainment. Luckily, I was able to fire off a few frames before dropping down to photograph the class.

🔍 You need to know this about Antarctica 🇦🇶 🐧

We hope this helps hit home a little more coming from us and not just another news source.

Emperor penguins were just globally classified by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) as endangered and reason is heartbreaking. The ice is melting too fast for the chicks. They freeze and drown in the water because the ice breaks off from the coastline and their waterproof feathers didn’t have time to develop. 😔 Human induced climate change is real.

Fur Seals are also on the endangered list. Krill is getting harder and harder for fur seals to find as Antarctic water temperatures rise. The rising temps cause krill to look for deeper, colder water and on top of that, they have predators and lots of other competition looking for krill. The worst competitor is humans. Have you ever heard of an industrial krill trawler? Definitely look it up. They scoop up massive quantities of krill and use it for human supplements and farmed seafood. Whales, penguins and seals are all impacted by this. Krill is vital to keeping the Antarctic ecosystem healthy.

Southern Elephant seals are classified as vulnerable currently due to the spread of avian flu. In some subpopulations 90% of pups don’t survive due to avian flu and these types of mortalities are projected to continue increasing with global temperatures rising.

What can you do:
- Go green on everything possible! Seriously. It won’t happen overnight but the sooner you start the more impact you will have.
- Check the ingredients on products before buying to see if it has krill in it. Beware, many times the ingredients will just say “shellfish”.

Check out our recent article in the March 2026 edition of Magazine. It’s called “Shooting Vertical Worlds: Capturing Height, Depth, and Scale”. It’s about shooting wide-angle in environments like kelp forests and icy waters. Had a great time on the level up podcast with William Cline and all the other contributors! Looking forward to more in the future 🙂

We are deeply honored to be opening the Boston Sea Rovers Film Festival tonight in the company of so many people who have inspired our journey in the ocean.

Many of the people who will be in the room this evening are the same people who inspired us to create Stories of the Kelp, a film born from our desire to highlight Catalina’s extraordinary biodiversity and the stunning emerald forests beneath its surface. Over the years, those underwater forests have become far more than a place we love. They have become our lifeline, our calling, and our purpose.

Tonight, we bring the kelp forest to Boston in the hope of revealing some of the wonder we experience beneath the canopies in our own backyard. A heartfelt thank you to Cristian Dimitrius and Erin Quigley for their mentorship, and to and Boston Sea Rovers for trusting us to help open what promises to be an incredible evening sparked by storytelling and the ripple effect of collective action and shared purpose for the underwater world.
