So another memory of our recent Iowa trip, as the “low” for tonight is forecasted as 81 degrees…which was often the daytime high back in the homeland. A fun day along the Cedar. Low water provided way more nice Bluegill than we’d ever seen before at this location. The Smallies, while not much in size overall, were definitely in force and the huge numbers of small ‘Eyes last year yields just a handful this year. Did land one of the biggest Softshell turtles I’ve encountered for my Bro!

This is why I leave stuff just sitting around sometimes. Because in storage or in the regular displays the sun will not hit pieces like this and just seeing it glow like fire emerging from this rock is just amazing!

A few cool mushrooms we saw out and about. I’m definitely leaving out the mushrooms tag because in the side it turns into a swarm of comments about psychedelic mushrooms and where you can buy them. Not what I’m posting these for folks, sorry, all about the nature and the species…not about that. Anyway, if you know what any of these are, please chime in, because I’m wanting to learn.

Life isn’t always results. “Seeing your world” doesn’t mean you have to do something you don’t like doing but more so finding the things in your world that you might be missing, making for a more complete and spiritually fulfilling experience…if you allow yourself to learn and see more. It’s not about catching the biggest fish or finding the best/most stuff. Often that competitive mindset slams the blinders on and doesn’t allow you really immerse yourself in the experience.

Lifers come in all shapes and sizes. This one being one of the oddly more intriguing ones I can remember and I owe it to my youngest telling me about the “leeches” she was seeing under boards in the back yard. Well we found this one after a short search and they turned out to be Terrestrial Flatworms. This one was spotted eating a slug! Interesting fact; The mouth of the flatworm is mid-body and they wrap around their prey in order to bring their mouth in contact position! Weird but cool, huh?

After several sightings I was beyond excited to finally get pictures of the Carolina Water Snake, a called salt marsh subspecies of the Northen Water Snake, and undoubtedly one of the coolest Nerodia I’ve ever laid eyes on when I could finally examine this beastly female up close. I’ll have to modify my saying a little, “If you ain’t bleeding, you ain’t herping!” 🤣🤣🤣

And here’s the final installment of my trip and what some of you may have been waiting for, the sneks! First down creek spot had a quick little Northern Water Snake cutie, and then I had the most stunning Eastern Hognose Snake I’ve ever seen crossing the trail right in front of me! Posted a short of YouTube already so my might have already seen this beautiful thing, but just look at that orange and black contrast! Finally upstream I found a fatty Queen Snake which is always a welcome find! It was an amazing hike and I really want to get back to Paris Mountain State Park to spend a whole day! There was also a lifer Eastern Least Clubtail that I couldn’t get a picture of because I’d a memory card failure. 😭. Guess that’s reason to go back!

So I’m this next edition of my posting we get some of the beautiful plants and fungus I saw. While I’m sure there was more then I saw that I could have seen the fact that I saw three or four species of plants for the first time ever in my life was so amazing!

A fun day with the kiddo! Lots of Redbreast, a couple Gills, and the little one even was picking them up on the Crickhopper including a sporty little Bass! We even saw a Brown Water Snake that was just letting us walk past it the whole time! 🤣
