Dianthus barbatus | Sweet William

Where did the name originate?

Some theories suggest it's a mispronunciation of the French word "oeillet" (meaning "eye" or "little eye"), which refers to the flower's eye-like center.
Other theories link the name to various historical figures named William, including Saint William, William Shakespeare, or William the Conqueror. Some also suggest it was named for William, Duke of Cumberland, but this theory is disputed.

Ultimately, the exact origin of the name "Sweet William" remains a mystery, with various theories and legends circulating.

The species name "barbatus" means "bearded" and refers to the beard-like growth on the flower's petals.

Traditional uses - Blood purifier and treatment for skin conditions: A tea made from dried leaves was traditionally used to purify the blood and treat boils and eczema.
Eyewash: Steeped roots were used as an eyewash.
Poultice for wounds: A poultice made from the petals was used on sores, bruises, burns, and as an eyewash.

Gardenia jasminoides | Cape Jasmine
There are over 200 varieties of gardenias worldwide!
This is my favorite flower and I can't wait to have bushes of these planted around my property one day!
Here are some of the most popular varieties:

‘Crown Jewel’
This dwarf variety maxes out at three feet tall, making it a good option for smaller spaces. It’s also one of the most cold tolerant gardenia cultivars and can survive in zone six. ‘Crown Jewel’ produces double flowers throughout the spring and summer.

‘August Beauty’
An iconic gardenia in many southern states, ‘August Beauty’ grows as a medium to large shrub. The plants produce large white flowers that bloom for multiple months. These blooms contain multiple layers of petals and emit a wonderful floral fragrance.

‘Frost Proof’
As you might expect, ‘Frost Proof’ is an excellent choice if you’re worried about cold weather and late frosts. It can tolerate spring cold better than other gardenia varieties and grows well without much care. The plants produce fragrant white flowers with an inner layer of small petals and an outer layer of longer petals.

‘Swan Princess’
This gardenia is another cold-hardy variety that can thrive in zones six and above. It produces loads of double-petaled white flowers that emit a strong fragrance. ‘Swan Princess’ remains under four feet tall, so it can be grown in the ground or in large containers.

Historic artwork shows the gardenia flowers were important in Chinese culture as early as the Song Dynasty (962-1279). Chinese people have used the flowers for their floral fragrance and women have used them as hair decor.

Alexander Garden (January 1730–April 15, 1791), a Scottish-born physician and naturalist, lived for many years in Charleston, South Carolina, where he pursued horticultural experiments in the garden of his town house and at his country estate, Otranto. Garden discovered several new genera of plants, and engaged in plant and seed exchanges with prominent botanists and plant dealers in Europe and America. The flowering shrub Gardenia was named in his honor.

Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan' | Kwanzan Cherry Blossom
The "Kanzan" name is derived from a mountain in Japan, where the tree is native.
The leaves of a Kwanzan tree offer a range of colors throughout the year, from bronze in spring to green in summer, and finally vibrant shades of orange and red in the fall.
Unlike some cherry varieties, Kwanzan trees don't produce fruit.

Allium vineale | Field Garlic, Crow Garlic, Wild Garlic
All parts of the plant have a strong garlic odor, and the leaves, flowers, and bulbs are edible.
They can be used in salads, cooked dishes, and as an herb similar to chives.
The bulbils are strongly flavored and retain their flavor well in cooking.
They can be dried and ground into a garlic powder or used to make garlic salt.
Wild garlic is thought to be effective at lowering blood pressure, potentially reducing the risk of stroke and heart disease. Some traditional uses of wild garlic include its use as an anti-asthmatic and blood purifier, as well as a carminative, cathartic, diuretic, and expectorant.

Leiobunum Vittatum | Harvestmen or Daddy Longlegs
Harvestmen are part of the arachnid family, but they are not spiders.
They don't have fangs or venom glands and don't spin webs.
While spiders can have multiple eyes, harvestmen only have two. See from the images, there are two beady black eyes!
A common myth is that harvestmen are the most venomous spiders, but they do not have venom glands or fangs to inject venom.

Tulipa gesneriana | Tulip
Tulips petals are edible and can be added to salads, soups, or even used to make wine.

Tulip Mania, also known as the Dutch Tulip Bubble, was a period of extreme speculation in the Dutch market in the 17th century, leading to soaring prices of tulip bulbs, followed by a dramatic crash. It's considered one of the first examples of a speculative bubble in economic history.

Some tulips develop stripes or streaks due to a harmless virus, a condition known as "tulip breaking".
