It is quite the waterfall season with the record snowpack. Niagara Creek Falls on the Stanislaus National Forest is one of the tallest waterfalls in California outside Yosemite, dropping 700 feet total. While it flows uncontrolled, it ultimately drops into Donnell Reservoir on the middle fork Stanislaus river. One can only imagine what it would be like to witness these falls flowing into the dramatic steep granite walled canyon that the reservoir drowned.

Winter’s Depths, Mokelumne River Canyon

From the snow capped Mokelumne peak to the river’s edge, the Mokelumne River canyon is 4500 feet deep, just 1600 feet shy of the depth of the Grand Canyon! The vertical relief provides gorgeous contrast through the winter as the snowline fluctuates.

On winters wings, Columbia 2019

Hermit thrush are secretive birds, you might glimpse one foraging in the cover of bushes, or luckier still, find one by following its sweet song. Unlike their other thrush relatives, such as the American robin, hermit thrush stay in the Sierra for the winter.

November Storm on Sonora Pass, 2018
This time of year, each storm has me guessing if it will be the last one to close the pass. The pass stayed open after this storm last year, as even the highest peaks only received a picturesque dusting of snow. It looks like winter is coming on full force next week! 🤞❄️🏔

Yosemite Toad, Inyo National Forest

Yosemite Toad inhabit high elevation meadows exclusively in the Sierra Nevada. Adults spend the long winters in burrows of rodents and other mammals. High elevation dwellers have to figure out how to reproduce within the short summer season. Where the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog has adapted by spending multiple years as large tadpoles, the Yosemite toad copes by reproducing in a hurry! Eggs hatch into tadpoles within 2 weeks of laying, and tadpoles emerge in terrestrial form in no more than 2 months!

Northern Pygmy Owl, Twain Harte
Ive had 2 encounters in the last 4 days with a northern Pygmy owl, but neither yielded a photo like this one from 2015 outside Twain Harte. These little owls are incredible, taking down prey twice their size and occasionally only consuming the brains of their prey. 🦉

Bobcat, Sonora
Your friendly neighborhood bobcat 🐾 I crossed paths with this bobcat while participating in the Audubon Christmas bird count a few years ago. As I was driving through a local neighborhood documenting bird species, I spotted this bobcat hunting gophers in someone’s front yard. Instead of crossing the road, it crawled through the culvert pipe. Bobcats have adapted well to urban environments. Typically bobcats live about 10 years, but I haven’t seen this one in the neighborhood again.
