I’ve been wanting to see the Northern Lights all my life. For the first time, I could see it from my driveway in Oswego, IL. I think what made this an even more magical experience was that we’re only 4 days into a new moon, which really helped making it visible to the camera. While these vibrant colors weren’t visible to the naked eye at 4am, it just looked like a wispy gray cloud or low level contrail slowly floating across the sky like a cloud would, but what the camera captured was incredible!!

I was at College of DuPage with MILTON TOWNSHIP CERT TEAM for Kryptonite’s class basic training yesterday and saw this amazing display of American Flags in front of the SSG Robert Miller Homeland Security center. So I had to stop and take some photos.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted Photos, I’m hoping to get back into that this year (and post some from the various milestone flights like the all women flight and the 100th HFC flight).

At any rate, this was another milestone flight. On this flight for Honor Flight Chicago, we flew our 10,000th hero to DC. Since June of 2008, Honor Flight Chicago has flown 10,068 senior war heroes! A truly incredible feat, more than 10,000 veterans!! It’s hard to wrap my head around that number. I missed the first 4 years that the organization was around, but I'm happy I’ve been involved in this incredible organization since 2012!

This flight was quite an unusual one, different from all the rest (or at least it started that way) and I’m not just talking about the 10,000 vet was on this flight. This flight started, April 5, but was cancelled due to weather. It was the FIRST time an Honor Flight Chicago flight has EVER been cancelled. These heroes sat on the tarmac for several hours, eager to get their day of honor started, waiting…for hours, all for the flight to be cancelled. moved the flight to May 10th.

On May 10th, these senior veteran heroes FINALLY got their day of honor! What a day it was! Beautiful weather, smooth flight, and welcome home they DESERVE!! And Southwest Airlines flew them in style. The chariot that took them to D.C. and back to Chicago was very own Freedom One aircraft

On this 107th flight ( ), 93 sailors from the Great Lakes Naval Recruit Training Command marched in from the Chicago Midway International Airport Security Checkpoint to Gate B1 singing Anchors Away to welcome home 113 veteran heroes.

Air Force: 16
Marines: 6

Of the 113 heroes, there were 2 Silver Star, 8 Bronze Star, and 5 Purple Heart recipients.

Since June 2008, we’ve flown a total of 10,068 heroes for their day of honor Washington D.C.
WWII: 6,343
Korean War: 2,175
Vietnam War: 1,550

I’m so happy these brave heroes, were able to finally receive their day of honor and were welcomed home in style!!

Lake Ellyn, in Glen Ellyn, IL from last night 10/1/2022. Waited for the sun to set and took this around 8pm. Timed it perfectly for that car that drove down Lake Rd to give dimension to show the other side of the lake. You can also see Jupiter (the bright star just above the horizon to the left of the image).

Honor Flight Magic.

Though they have kept in touch sporadically over the years, Larry Bychowski has not seen this comrade in arms from his unit in Vietnam since they were in-country. One day in combat, he literally saved Larry's life during a close encounter with a Viet Cong. Larry told him he would be with HFC in DC today, and a surprise reunion happened at the WWII Memorial.

Larry said: "Without him, I'd have been a goner." Instead, they were together again today.

Took the garbage out a few weeks ago around 4/5am, on a crisp, clear and moonless night/morning, and I found this amazing sight. I was so blown away by the number of stars I could see. I broke out the camera and tripod, manually set the focus appropriately for stars, and did a few long exposures.

With my naked eye, I could see maybe 1/10th of what you can see here. And the RAW image shows about twice what you see in this image. In the first pic, if you zoom in, you can see what looks like a “shooting star”, that I absolutely could not see with my name eye.

Stars are one of my favorite things to see..and one of the things I rarely photograph! I hope you enjoy!

After Honor Flight Chicago wrapped their 104th flight , I was returning to my car (top level of the parking deck) and saw the planes were landing on runway 22L, and their approach brought them next to the parking garage. So I snapped a few panning shots (handheld). Loved this shot of the blurred lights in the background but a sharp plane!
