Bex messaged me in late August asking if there was any possibility I could photograph her marriage to her partner, Mark, specifically noting time was of the essence. She had recently received the devastating news that her father didn’t have much time left, and it was so important to her that he be present for this milestone. The plan was simple and intimate: a brief exchange of vows in the courtyard of the hospice, attended only by their immediate families. “It will be incredibly unfancy, and not a portfolio piece but very meaningful.”
If you know me personally, you know how incredibly unfancy I am. I’ve often said I’m just a basic b*tch with a camera that feels more like a gianormous extension of my heart. So to be asked to document such an intimate and vulnerable time in their lives… it was a tremendous honor.
Her father passed away two weeks later, and when I watch this back now, I’m still moved by the weight of it..
This is a story, and an ode per se, to transitions.
The shift from two separate paths into one shared journey, and the deeper, quieter transition from one state of being into another.
I am profoundly grateful that he was able to witness his daughter begin her next chapter.
What a beautiful thing it is -
to love, and be loved.
