Every day is someone’s birthday.
Somewhere someone is breaking generational curses through birth.
Someone somewhere is carrying on a generational name.
It can be a big weight to carry, and sometimes we don’t realize how heavy being the one to bring new life into the world is until we feel it.
You are brave.
You are strong.
You are the change.
Just take a deep breath and be in the moment. One moment at a time.
Today we get to see our and get a heartbeat confirmation, something I know moms anxiously wait until almost their second trimester to hear. Hoping to be able to face time the mother and together we will find out if it’s one or two!
And with their permission I will share with you the results! Stay tuned.
What’s your vote?!?

Happy International HomeBirth day!!
Photos from My first unassisted home birth, another pivotal moment to chose to become a certified doula not just do birth photography.
And a huge reason why I want to become a midwife.
This little man was born at home unassisted surrounded by his dad, two older brothers and older sister.
The original plan was mom or dad to catch this sweet little babe but when the moment came and his waters broke and his dad quickly moving to avoid the splash, then I saw that nuchal cord, I dropped my camera (thankfully it was around my neck), dove to catch him and unwrap his cord and pass him to mom as she got back in the tub to deliver the placenta. To be honest I wasn’t prepared and it scared me, knowing that something could have gone terribly wrong and I would have hated myself for it.
I had no prior training and I didn’t even remember my daughter (my third) having a nuchal cord just half a year prior until I rewatch her video recently. A nuchal cord (a cord around the babies neck) is a variation of normal, but at that time I was not confident in my skills or knowledge, but I trusted God and I trusted her body, and her baby.
Even though my adrenaline was pumping and I was in high alert because this was my first unassisted (her third) I captured all that I could leading up to the birth and then I “caught” and unwrapped my first baby that wasn’t mine and my life was changed forever. I can’t wait to journey with this mama as a doula and photographer and possibly a student midwife if I get started before her next little babe will be born at home.

Spent mother’s day whispering a baby out and witnessing not only a baby being born, but a mother. Happy Mother’s Day. To all who are waiting, wishing, Grieving, rejoicing, thanking, growing, and loving.
Another image bearer of God brought into this world through prayer, peace, hard hard work, and right on time.
Her story, their story, is one I have been so honored to be apart of.
Not sure if it’s just exhaustion kicking in, but sitting in aw and wonder at this beauty, in tears at this moment.
Can’t wait to share her birth story!

• Baby C’s birth story •
First time mom, unexpected pregnancy, and now her birth plan is completely thrown out because she can no longer birth at the birth center she chose, but now is considered high risk because of pre-eclampsia which was missed by her first care provider.
Schedule for an induction just days after diagnosis at 38 week she was encouraged to find a doula since her midwife wasn’t allowed to attend the birth (thanks COVID)
She was connected to me. I had just finished my certification and waiting on my certificate to come which was needed to attend this birth.
We talked on the phone worked out some details but without time for a prenatal visit or time to really get to know each other, I joined her for her induction.
Day one. A pill to ripen the cervix, after that, we went for a walk, but then notice her blood pressure increase and though that this wasn’t the way to get baby out and we were in for a long road ahead.
Making sure she kept hydrated, eat when she could and was hungry, went to the bathroom every hour and at least changed positions every hour.
I went home to rest after a whole day with some progress, and nurse my baby.
To be continued.

✨ water births ✨
My second birth with ZoĂŤ was in the tub and it was a real dream, hard and scary was a lot of her pregnancy really wondering if I could do this all again and never really knowing if the next contraction was early labor or just a Braxton Hicks because I felt every one and saw every one.
Each tiger stripe on my belly pointed to the beauty to come.
I don’t even remember pushing with her, I just remember breathing during the contraction, and in between claiming I couldn’t do it, wondering if my midwife would make it because she was coming fast. Being reminded to just breath and that I was indeed doing It.
Wondering what she looked like and oh man look at that hair.
This birth was so redemptive and so different than my first.
So thankful my mom grabbed my camera because my photographer didn’t make it and my mom wouldn’t have either if she didn’t follow right behind us.
Would you do a water brith? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

✨ Crowning ✨
When baby decides to crown it’s best to listen to your body (if unmedicated) let your perineum stretch to lessen the chance on tearing.
This feeling or what’s called the ring of fire can really scare moms as well as with the fear of all your insides coming out with the baby.
These fears along with others (mine was the fear of tearing) can making the pushing time soooo much longer because with each push you really do 2 steps forward one step back. Like the baby is play peek a boo which at this point isn’t very nice but is very helpful in preparing your body for your baby to come right through a tiny opening.
Sometimes the perineum and the pelvic floor is so tight and mom can’t mentally or physically push through that pressure and (may I say) pain they feel. This is when some doctors preform an episiotomy to give the baby a bigger opening to come through. (An episiotomy was done right before this photo after 4 hours of pushing which rarely happens)
It’s more common practice to allow the mom to tear on her own if she is going to tear.
Talk to your care provider about their episiotomy practices.
I tore with two out of the three. First being the absolute worst, the third was because I pushed her out with one push and was done, but thankfully wasn’t too bad thanks to the tub!

The calm before the...
transition stage because after that hit I wanted to get the heck out of that damn tub.
Did you labor in the tub?
My second and third were born in the tub and they were beautiful, but this tub, I could not get comfortable and I was freaking out. I didn’t have a doula and didn’t really know what to do and it was really scary so that flight or fight respond kicked in that tub.
Glad my mlm captured a few photos, but never ask a laboring mama how to work her camera 😅🙄

• eye ointment - Erythromycin •
Is it necessary? Well that’s really a personal question.
In most cases no. Just like all interventions. Most cases interventions in birth and with baby is not necessarily needed, but there are always the what if’s.
Those what if’s are why the Doctors and nurses using opt for the interventions and prophylaxis (prevention for the just in case situations).
But, let’s weigh SOME of the pros and cons.
As always please talk with your care provider, I am not a doctor, but I’m a birth professional and I’m here for you to make the best decision for you and your family and support whatever that may be.
PRO
• can prevent ON - a type of pink eye that can cause blindness (although very rare it would be awful for your newborn to go through that and be blind for the rest of their life)
• it’s a antibiotic so it can prevent eye infections from lots of bacteria that can come from the birth canal or other hands handling baby.
CONS
• makes it hard for baby to see.
( A baby is born with vision that reaches about 12" - the same distance from breast to mother's face. This is not a coincidence. )
• can also take away from the good bacteria in babies eye.
• can cause clogged tear ducts

✨as an adult I was given erythromycin ointment for a pretty serious eye infection, it sucked to put it on I couldn’t see and this made things harder and on top of that it didn’t help I ended up taking an oral and knocked it out fast! 👍🏻
If you do not have an active Sexual transmitted infection flare up during birth, the ointment isn’t really that necessary, but there is always the what if’s.
There are more pros and cons, but what I want you to know from
this is that you should take away from this: INFORMED CONSENT. You need to be educated on what will happen to your newborn after birth. Talking to your birth team and voicing your plans will ensure that you are on the same page. That way, you rest easy - with your baby who can see you!
It’s absolutely okay if your baby had this ointment and you have 0 problems, and you may not even remember.
Also, you are completely welcomed to wipe it off afterwards.
