Scully's friend Mini is in town for a few days and she talked her into hanging out for a portrait. Mini was rescued from the Everglades where she was thrown away after her breeders were done with her. She battled snakes and crocodiles for months before she was rescued by a park ranger and then adopted by my mom and has been living happily ever after ever since!

No special lighting set up here, I just came across this bored Border Collie lounging in an afternoon sunbeam. I grabbed my camera and exposed for the highlights, letting the rest of the image fall into shadow. Don't worry, she got to play and do some fun stuff later that afternoon!

Scully has a new best friend, his name is Monk and she invited him over to the studio yesterday. It was his first time having his portrait made so he was a little nervous, but we got this quick snapshot.

*tech info: For this photo we used a 24-105 f4 lens set at 105mm and f7.1 with three lights, one key light directly above the camera and two fill lights at 45 degree angles behind the subject. There was also a white bounce card below the subject.

This incredibly talented young man was the drummer in the first punk rock band I was in. He can play a multitude of instruments and is one of my favorite hardcore vocalists. I got to hang with him for a little bit last weekend and although it was 90 degrees in the shade we still managed to make a few fun portraits in his backyard. This snapshot was made with one light and an umbrella at about 2:00 in the afternoon.

We've been working with a new printing company, "Miller's Professional Imaging", (www.millerslab.com) and I would recommend them very highly. The turn around time on all of our orders has been mind blowing and their customer service is outstanding! This print that I just framed is one of the test enlargements I had made recently, they even did a little bit of color and density correction (at no extra charge) to make sure the final print was perfect.

I’ve been testing the 24-105 R series lens. The sweet spot seems to be about aperture f8. The “sweet spot” on a lens is the point where you have the least amount of diffraction and aberration, the least amount of distortion in your image. This is the point where your image will be the sharpest.
The general rule for finding the sweet spot on a lens is to count up two full f-stops (apertures) from the widest aperture. For example, the widest aperture on the lens I used for this image is 4.0. Two stops up from that would be f8. However, there is some wiggle room, I’ve found that with this lens I can shoot between f7.1 and f9 and still maintain the sharp image quality.

I just realized that I still have a few copies of this limited edition print! This has been my second most popular print of all time, they can be found in my online gallery store at: https://www.jameswalkerstudios.com/products/stars-and-satellites
The image of this lone tree surviving on this vast New Mexican tundra was originally made using a 4x5 Crown Graphic Graflex camera and type 55 positive/negative Polariod film.

This brand new original mixed media painting is a continuation of my smaller works on paper and is based on a photo of a Bighorn Sheep that Anna and I recently had the opportunity to photograph on the way to Winter Park. It was the first time I had seen one in the wild and I was super grateful to have been able to hang out with these majestic creatures for a few minutes.

I have another new small original painting available in my online gallery store. This piece is mixed media on a vintage book cover and measures 8"x9", framed in dark brown solid pine wood frame. The dragonfly, in almost every part of the world symbolizes change and change in the perspective of self realization; and the kind of change that has its source in mental and emotional maturity and the understanding of the deeper meaning of life.

I wanted to share this new piece in which I revisited a favorite image. A few years ago I photographed this beautiful asian elephant and ever since I have been inspired to create various paintings based on our meeting. Here is the latest in the series, created using acrylics, aerosol, and colored pencils. https://www.jameswalkerstudios.com/products/inspiration

We have some bison living near us but they are super elusive and I haven't been able to photograph them yet so I made this painting from an old reference photo. The Bison is a symbol of sacred life and abundance. They are an indomitable spirit with an unshakable will to survive and face any challenge with the fortitude to overcome. This piece was created using acrylics, aerosol, colored pencils and watercolors. Thanks for looking :)

This new painting was created on a reclaimed skateboard using a variety of mixed media techniques. First I collaged the background with pieces of recycled paper, then I put down a few colors of diluted acrylic paint. I used some spray paint to blend the colors into the white part in the middle. I masked off the bottom to create a solid line and used some old bubble wrap to create parts of the texture, I wanted a pattern that subtly reminded me of water. The images are original photographs that I had taken a while ago, the elephant is one of my favorites and I re-contextualize him often. These images were printed with a toner based machine so that they could be transfered onto the background. I used some water colors on the images before transferring to create some soft color tones. I’ll be posting a more in-depth discussion about transfer techniques in the future. Thanks for looking!

A sunset portrait of my lovely wife and her loyal companion on the edge of the bowl at Railbender Skatepark. We were in the middle of a super fun session and as I carved through the bowl I noticed that the sun was about to dip behind the trees and everyone standing on the west deck of the bowl was a silhouette against the afternoon sky. I knew I had to stop and make some photographs, fortunately I had two perfect subjects for this portrait. This image was made using a 35mm prime lens at f1.8 1/8000 ISO100. I based the exposure on an average meter reading of the sky, just above and to the right of the sun so as to get the beautiful oranges and blues with a nice saturation and still let the brightness of the last few rays of sunlight create a dramatic highlight.

I sold one of my favorite new pieces last weekend and while I'm excited that it is going to a good home I am even more excited about those of you who are out there supporting the arts. I wanted to take a minute to say thank you and express my gratitude to each and every one of you. Not just for supporting my work but for making it possible for any and all artists to do what they do. You are appreciated more than you know. Art is such an integral and important part of society, not only does it bring happiness but it causes us to ask questions, to think in different ways, and create new dialogues. An appreciation and love of art proves that we still have a higher purpose as human beings.

Thank you so much, on behalf of myself and all artists.

Skateboarding exclamates and elevates many life lessons. One of my favorites is Persistence. If you’ve ever watched a skateboarder going for a trick and witnessed all the times they get close to landing it, walking the fine line between success and serious bodily harm, then you must appreciate their persistence in the face of absolute peril. Try, fall, get back up, repeat. This is a huge part of the essence of skating.

The important thing to remember is that you never know how close you are to accomplishing your goal, it could be the very next try. If you really want to succeed you must keep pushing yourself because there would be nothing worse than trying something 150 times and then giving up and walking away not knowing that attempt number 151 would have been the winner.

Persistence my friends, if you are physically capable of getting back up, then you have the ability to keep trying.

Here’s a snapshot of Brian from a few weeks ago, he put in some work to get this backside air over the spine at Castle Rock. I admit I cringed a little bit every time he nearly clipped his back wheels on the copping and bailed on the landing. But like most everyone I’ve ever skated with he kept getting up and going for it and was rewarded with a clean landing a fraction of a second after I snapped this photo.

While we were on our way out of town after a glorious skate session at Loveland Skatepark Anna spotted this beautiful old car reposing in the landscape. She insisted that I jump out and photograph it and I'm super stoked that I did because one of my favorite things about the Southwest is all of the random vintage artifacts that are just lounging around, ruminating and waiting for someone to photograph them.

With a background in traditional wet darkroom photography I am always searching for a way to merge the worlds of digital and analog image making. In the past I was hesitant to apply too much post production "art sauce" to my images until I realized that one of the things I love about film photography is the serendipity of print making, especially with type 55 and 665 Polaroid negatives. Obviously the "craft" of black and white darkroom printing is extremely important, but where you push it to after you've mastered the craft is what makes your images unique and special. I recently realized that that was the same in digital post production as well. It is imperative that you start with a decent image, but where you take that image, whether it is a simple levels correction or a set of custom actions, is what ultimately makes your photographs unique.
