I caught (figuratively) this fox along the highway in Fauquier County. One thing about wildlife this time of year is that they have their new winter coats on and haven't yet suffered the strains of living through the winter. So when you see them, they are absolutely beautiful (especially foxes).

I don't photograph wildlife much, but I secretly hope I come back in my next life as a wildlife photographer....

Autumn at Oatlands Church

Seeing this image of Oatlands Church reminds me that time can be cruel. Like so many of our old historic buildings in our area of northern Virginia, this beautiful old romantic church has been abandoned and its custodians are neglecting its care. Who knows whether it will remain standing for much longer, but I certainly hope so.

For much of the year, this small country red brick church on the American Piedmont sits secluded within the greenery of the woodlands. But in Autumn, it joins its neighbors in the show. Chameleonic, isn't it? More about the Limited Edition Fine Art Print

It's fascinating how nature thrives on itself. These autumn oaks in Shenandoah NP appear to be made from the same stone from which they are growing.

I know, everybody takes this picture when visiting Shenandoah NP, but this one is mine.

While taking it with my big bellows camera, a man and women came up to me and started asking questions. I'm usually open to that, even though I'm trying to concentrate on picture-making and I've screwed up several shots by being distracted while shooting.

I finally offered to use their camera to take their picture in this scene, they agreed and then left, and I finished taking this autumn picture of the tunnel near VA 211 access point.

Get out and see the colors before they're gone... it's inevitable, y'know. Enjoy!

"Meig's Falls in an Autumn Frame" See original image here ––> http://bit.ly/37FcHZ0

Tucked back in the forest of Great Smoky Mountains NP is Meig's Falls. Everyone stops to see it, regardless of the season, because it's visible from the small road leading to Cade's Cove. And even though this scene is iconic GSMNP, I still had to capture it for my own satisfaction.
Enjoy!
PS: I have one (1) 11x14 inch mounted print of this scene as a hand-varnished limited edition archival pigment print available, if interested in having this in your home. It's ready for framing. "Low Water at Elakala Falls" ––>http://bit.ly/37z7xhn
During my recent trip to the Allegheny plateau in WV, a fellow photographer remarked how low the waterfalls were. "Dried up" was the phrase he used; "hardly any water." He said it in a disappointing tone.
But my ears perked up at the news, because I happen to really enjoy conditions in nature that you can label atypical, abnormal, and different. With waterfalls, low water means one huge "normal" waterfall turns into hundreds of beautiful tiny waterfalls, with rivulets of water flowing everywhere. It becomes a scene that I find much more quieting and calming, which is fitting during the dry times of the year. Hope you enjoy climbing over the rocks to see "Low Water at Elakala Falls" as much as I did.

Autumn Canopy at Mabry Mill

"Autumn Canopy at Mabry's Mill" --> https://jrileystewart.com/galleries/romantic-landscapes/Autumn_Canopy_at_Mabry_Mill/
You'll never see this scene of Mabry's Mill (VA) in real life. I really mean it. Since I took this picture a couple Autumns ago, the massive limb of the maple tree has fallen down and is no longer 'in the picture.'

There are many more interesting / beautiful scenes that I don't take pictures of than the number of those that I do. Yet, I often find myself wishing I'd photographed them later on, when I find that the scene has completely changed since my last visit. Such is nature, though... ever changing.

Enjoy the full image cropping by tapping on the picture.

One of the earliest signs of coming Autumn in Appalachia is the changing of the ferns from green, to russet, to gold, to brown, and it all happens over a few short weeks. I always look forward to it.

You might think taking B&W pictures during Autumn would be crazy. But I really like the character of the lighter tones that yellow & orange leaves create on a B&W landscape.
And Glade Creek Grist Mill in Babcock SP (WV) is so often photographed and shown on social media, I think the B&W version says something very different than its color renditions.
What do you think?

"Recital" ––> https://jrileystewart.com/galleries/woodlands/Recital/

While out exploring the early autumn colors of the Allegheny Mts a couple years ago, I kept passing this clearing with an old apple tree standing alone from the forest. I found her 'swinging' character very interesting, but the light was just too harsh to take her picture. Finally, on my last evening I made myself stop, if for no reason than to enjoy the nature of the clearing itself, even if it was in flat harsh sunlight. Wow. At one point nearing sundown, the forest and most of the clearing fell into shadows, leaving the old apple tree appear to be in a spotlight, as if standing on a stage, ready to dance.

I thought you might enjoy her recital performance too, and see other woodlands creatures while there. #quietofappalachia #art #appalachia #corporateart

This is the time of year to get your feet wet. The streams are running low, so there's little danger of getting swept away. Plus, living water has a way of showing us exactly where it likes to go when not forced.

I stopped for dinner at this spot along Skyline Drive (a feast of beef jerky, potato chips, celery, and pudding - all the important food groups) to enjoy the sunset. I'd quit taking pictures for the day; just needed some down time. At some point during my quiet feasting, I noticed the repetition of the forks in the trees, and found it interesting. So I took a picture to remind me of the moment. I've been by here many times since, and the feeling of quiet and peace I experienced during the moment has eluded me.

Seeing human characteristics in non-human objects is one of the ways I have fun with pictures.
This grouping of rocks caught my attention under the early evening light in Shenandoah NP. It seemed to me they had an excessive celebration toward the tree with which they shared their space.

Night Falling on a Beaver Pond

The last time I visited this beaver pond up on the Allegheny Front, it was all dried up, with only a trickle of its feeder stream remaining. But on this visit, the pond was alive with light, and shadow, and all the sounds one hears at dusk when we humans stay quiet long enough to see, and listen. #quietofappalachia, #appalachia #corporateart

As night falls, the bright reflections of the sky give way to the mystery of the shadows.

Art for Important Spaces

We all have spaces that are important to us. We live in them, work in them, create in them, entertain in them, think in them, and relax in them.

Art has a unique way of making our important spaces much more, well...cherished. More beautiful. More evocative. More contemplative. Even cave dwellers understood the human value of having art in their important spaces.

Everything I do as a photographic artist focuses on helping others turn their important spaces into cherished spaces. Read my artist statement here: https://gallery.jrileystewart.com/statement.

I love to write about art and how we need it in our daily lives. And since I use a camera to create art, most of what I write about relates to the beauty and significance of photographic art.
