The national bird of Cuba is the Cuban Trogon, also known by its local name, the Tocororo. It is a colorful bird with plumage in blue, white, and red, which are the same colors as the Cuban flag, and it is known for its inability to survive in captivity, symbolizing freedom for Cubans.
Scientific name: Priotelus temnurus
Appearance: Features a blue crown, a red beak and breast, and white chest feathers that echo the colors of the Cuban flag.
Symbolism: Often called the “bird of freedom” because it is said to die quickly if caged, a trait that is seen as a metaphor for Cubans’ love of freedom.
Habitat: Found in forested areas throughout Cuba.
