The national bird of Cuba is the Cuban Trogon, also known by its local name, the Tocororo. It is a colorful bird with plumage in blue, white, and red, which are the same colors as the Cuban flag, and it is known for its inability to survive in captivity, symbolizing freedom for Cubans.

Scientific name: Priotelus temnurus

Appearance: Features a blue crown, a red beak and breast, and white chest feathers that echo the colors of the Cuban flag.

Symbolism: Often called the “bird of freedom” because it is said to die quickly if caged, a trait that is seen as a metaphor for Cubans’ love of freedom.

Habitat: Found in forested areas throughout Cuba.

I was lucky enough to see a couple of birds while visiting Cuba.
THis is the bee hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae), which is also the smallest bird in the world. Also known by its local name zunzuncito, it is native to the island of Cuba. 
Size: Males measure about \(2.4\) inches (\(6\) cm) and weigh about \(0.09\) ounces (\(2.6\) grams).
Habitat: It lives in Cuba’s forests and along the coast.
Diet: It feeds on nectar from flowers and small insects like gnats and mosquitoes.
Conservation: The bee hummingbird is classified as “Near Threatened” by the IUCN, primarily due to habitat loss.

I was lucky enough to see a couple of birds while visiting Cuba.
