You may have heard about the “Public Art” slated at Ewell Plaza, which unfortunately had a flawed process and completely avoided getting local artists’ input. This project involves the largest amount of public art money Lancaster has ever had to work with ($600,000.00!!) and will likely be awarded to a firm from Miami instead of one of Lancaster’s many talented, hardworking, devoted artists.
A meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 26th at 4:00pm at Mulberry Art Studios for artists and community members to discuss this, and try to come up with a better way to celebrate our Historic and Wonderful thriving art community! We hope to see you there!

This beautiful dog was featured in our We Love Our Pets exhibit last April, and she is still awaiting her forever family. Please consider adopting Hera.
CENTRAL PA area:
How is it even possible that this pretty little pittie still has not found her forever home??
Hera is a wonderful companion for the right family. She needs lots and lots of exercise as she is a bundle of energy! She loves to play and run. An active person or family would be ideal.. the "two walks a day" type home will just not cut it.
Hera would love to be an only dog and would not like to share her home with cats. Her perfect home would be... with a loving and active family, a fenced in yard (physical fence), no small children, lots of ball throwing, hiking or any outdoor activity. Hera also loves to snuggle on the couch! Please pm us for more information and an application. Hera would really love a family of her own for the holidays!
Sadly, we cannot adopt her to renters due to unfair breed restrictions.
In 2019, only four percent of hundreds of thousands of local wedding professionals listed on The Knot received this distinguished award. In its thirteenth annual year, The Knot continues its longstanding tradition of supporting local wedding vendors with The Knot Best of Weddings 2019, an annual by-couples, for-couples guide to the top wedding professionals across the country. To determine the winners, The Knot analyzed its millions of user reviews across various vendor categories, including venues, musicians, florists, photographers, caterers and more, to find the best and most rated vendors of the year. These winners represent the best of the best wedding professionals that a couple should consider booking for their own unique wedding.

SALON DES REFUSÉS
Robert Bitts, Bill Christensen, Scott Spangler, Frederick D. Swarr, Ken Vieth, and Lynne Yancha
September 2019 at Mulberry Art Studios
The Salon des Refuses
French for "Exhibition of Rejects," The Salon des Refuses refers to an art exhibition held in Paris in 1863, to show paintings by the French Artists that had been rejected by the Selection Committee of the "Paris Salon," the official annual showcase of French Art.
In 1993, a group of art graduates from Millersville University decided to have an Alumni Art Exhibition for their 25th Anniversary. Millersville was more than happy to accommodate their request. They had an elaborate Artist Reception on Family Day during Homecoming Weekend, and a month long exhibit in Ganser Gallery.
In early 2016, the group sent a letter to MU stating that 2019 would be the 50th Anniversary of their graduation. They expressed their desire to have another art exhibit in one of the galleries at MU for those who had continued to produce exhibition artwork. A few weeks went by without reply. They then contacted the art department secretary. She informed them that their request had been passed along to the appropriate gallery directors. A few more weeks passed without a response. They again contacted the art department secretary and she informed them that the gallery director's meeting had taken place but no final list of exhibits for 2019 had been completed. A few more weeks went by without any counter reply to their request, so once again they contacted the art department. This time they were told that the list of exhibits had been completed and they were not included in the 2019 schedule.
Their artwork was never reviewed or juried. They received no explanation from any art department member regarding their request for exhibit. At this point they took this to mean they were "Rejected to Exhibit." They were given no choice but to have their own 50 Year Anniversary Alumni Art Exhibition. States the group: "Like the French Artists, we rebel against MU's decision to reject us with out own 'Salon des Refuses Exhibition.'
Come to Mulberry Art Studios this September to see the masterful artwork of these "rejected" artists. Paintings, mixed media pieces, and sculptures will be on display from artists Robert Bitts, Bill Christensen, Scott Spangler, Frederick D. Swarr, Ken Vieth, and Lynne Yancha. The exhibit opens with a First Friday Reception from 5pm-9pm on September 6th, and will run throughout the month of September. Mulberry Art Studios is located in historic downtown Lancaster at 19-21 North Mulberry Street, and offers free parking in their private lot.
Tie dye and the Fish Cheer have taken over Mulberry. Michael Martelli’s Tie Dye With A Twist and our Tribute to the Music of Woodstock will be going all night. Like Ram Dass said, “Be here now!” ✌️
It’s a Woodstock celebration over at Mulberry tonight. Our first guest arrived a little while ago, and he came in style. Everyone say hi to Rick Wagner from Lancaster! (He has the peace sign and cross from the actual fencing used in 1969 for Woodstock Festival!) Join us in our tie dye draped gallery (thanks to the incredible artistry of Michael Martelli) as we immerse ourselves in the music of Woodstock! ✌️
Harmony Redesign is looking for an artist to paint words on a wall in Lancaster for First Friday next week. Anyone interested?
A Tribute to the Music of Woodstock
“But when I played Woodstock, I'll never forget that moment looking out over the hundreds of thousands of people, the sea of humanity, seeing all those people united in such a unique way. It just touched me in a way that I'll never forget.” -Edgar Winter
50 years ago, in mid-August 1969, on Max Yasgur’s 600 acre dairy farm in Bethel, NY, a music festival became a cultural touchstone. Of course that music festival, which was attended by half a million people and boasted 32 musical acts, was the one and only Woodstock.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest moments of musical history, Mulberry Art Studios invites you to join us for an evening reveling in the music of Woodstock during First Friday, August 2nd. DJ Chuck will be spinning the music of that moment- Janis Joplin, CCR, Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead- in a transformed Mulberry Ballroom draped in the exquisite tie dye fabric art of Michael Martelli.
Music begins at 8:30. $12 at the door. $10 if you pay ahead or if you show up wearing tie dye! For more details contact call Mulberry Art Studios at 717-295-1949.
Mulberry Art Studios is located in historic downtown Lancaster at 19-21 North Mulberry Street, and offers free parking in their private lot.
Tie Dye with a Twist: Fabrics Manipulated to another Dimension
Tie Dye with a Twist, an eclectic collection of tie dyed fabric designs from award winning tie dye artist Michael Martelli, will be rocking Mulberry Art Studios this August. The public is invited to come out and experience this glorious color explosion of exhibit on opening night with a First Friday Reception from 5pm-9pm.
Many of us have dabbled in tie dye as a child (especially if you have spent any time at summer camp) and you have certainly seen it at your favorite boardwalk beach shop or musical festival- but Martelli's work is taking on the gallery exhibition scene, and it is perfectly suited there. Using a variety of media, Martelli presents his artistically crafted tie dyes in new ways. Pieces are presented traditionally as fabric and also as hard pieces with the fabric stretched over wood and finished with a hard resin coating.
Michael Martelli was drawn to the kind and loving vibes of the Grateful Dead’s music and Deadhead lifestyle from his teen years. He followed the Grateful Dead for 10 years during which time he found a deep connection to the music and the kindness centered way of life among the Deadheads. He developed a great appreciation for the beautiful tie dyed artwork he saw on tour, but did not know how it was made or ever try his hand at such work at the time. Years later, as Martelli was nearing fifty years old and raising a family of four children with his wife, he suddenly faced a series of health crises. First, his wife experienced a brain aneurysm rupture. Then Michael himself suffered a heart attack. Michael then had two aortic aneurysm ruptures followed by a series of operations that left him with serious medical complications. It was during this time of recovery that Michael decided to try his hand at tie dye, and found suddenly that he had a gift he’d never known about.
With each trial, his skills improved. He began to find new ways to approach his art and build his understanding of that craft to create new ways of making and presenting tie dye. He found healing in his artistic expression and has found that it is his love and passion. He is acutely aware of how limited time on this earth can be, and is inspired to spread beauty and joy as far as he can through his art with whatever time he has in this life to do so. Martelli continues to find new ways to present tie dyed art pieces and has become an inspiration to others in the field. He has found especially great joy in providing large pieces for backdrops at concert venues. His ability to create a beautiful piece of art from very large fabric pieces has won him admiration from fellow artists. His stage backdrops have been enjoyed at concert venues locally as well as across the country, all the way the San Francisco.
"I am inspired to spread joy through the beauty of art as far and as long as I can with the time I have left to do so," Martelli says.
