Over the last few years, I've continued to refine not just my photography, but how I teach it. Between my own work and in mentoring others, one thing has become abundantly clear to me: most photographers don't need more information, they need confidence, and a real foundation from which to shoot with greater intention.

In the past, I've hosted workshops that were entirely instruction based, and others that were dedicated solely to hands-on shooting. This time, I'm bringing the best of both together into one comprehensive experience.

We'll spend the day exploring not just what I do, but why I do it. I'll walk you through my thought process in real time, from reading light and directing people to making creative decisions with intention, before putting everything into practice with guided, hands-on shooting.

My goal is for you to leave this workshop seeing portraiture completely differently, learning to trust your own instincts, and capturing with greater confidence.

I met Josey in my teenage years, back when we were a bunch of little skate rats. We'd be bouncing between street spots all over Ephrata literally in the middle of the night because I mean, that's just what you do when you're sixteen. It seemed like a perfectly reasonable idea at the time. Over the years we loosely stayed in touch, but eventually life happened and we mostly lost connection.
In more recent years and especially the last six months, I returned to one of my greatest loves: making music. This time, though, I committed to actually getting out there and performing my songs. As it turns out, Josey was in the same camp, having his own musical renaissance after more than a decade-long hiatus. He reached out about doing some promotional photos, and that shoot turned into something much bigger.
Back in March I hosted an intimate show at my photography studio, and Josey, who performs under the name Warren, was one of the artists. Funny how life works. Music ended up being the thing that brought us back together and rekindled a great friendship.

I met Donna over 10 years ago, when I was brand new to headshots and portraits. I can't even remember how we first got connected, but I do remember her energy, and how it translated into one of my favorite portraits from those early days.
Looking back, I got the lighting right mostly by a stroke of beginner's luck. But those images gave me something I desperately needed at the time: that little voice saying, "Okay... I can do this." I kept going, and that session has stayed with me ever since.
Fast forward a decade. I ran into Donna at Prince Street Cafe and asked if she'd be willing to come back in for a complimentary session, just as a small thank you for the role she unknowingly played in my journey. Thankfully, she said yes.
We spent the afternoon catching up and making these portraits together. Ten years later, she's as striking as ever.
Forever grateful for this woman.

Rob is a thoughtful, curious, slightly eccentric presence. It's reflected in his work, from his NY Times bestselling books to his recent play, We'll Get Back To You.
I was brought in to photograph him at Prima Theatre, and the experience tapped directly into why I got into portrait photography in the first place. We talked about photographer Platon, and his ability to strip everything back and reveal the human behind the face. That’s always the goal for me, but it only works when there’s trust on both sides.
This shoot had that. It felt collaborative, intuitive… electric. At one point (actually, a few), he stopped to give me a hug in the middle of shooting, just in pure gratitude for what we were creating together. I’m grateful for the time, the trust, and what came out of it.

I first came across Rob Bell’s work as a teenager, so learning that he was collaborating with Prima Theatre 20 years later felt a bit surreal. His play, We’ll Get Back To You, is a powerful blend of sharp humor, impeccable comedic timing, and moving moments that remind you of what it really is to be human. I had the opportunity to photograph the opening night, and ended up going back again just to experience it as an audience member.
