They say a strong photograph needs a subject and I think that is generally true. I’m not sure what the subject of this one would be, unless it is the spring itself. It was a captivating scene in person and I hope this image conveys that. Alley Spring is in south central Missouri and is the site of one of the most iconic scenes in the state: Alley Mill.

Alley Spring is a beautiful natural spring in the Missouri Ozarks that gushes 81 million gallons of clear, cool water per day. The seventh largest spring in Missouri, the spring conduit reaches least 3,000 feet and goes over 150 feet underground. A labyrinth of caves carry water from over 15 miles to feed it. The gristmill has stood on this site since 1894. Help me decide between the wider and closer perspectives. Let me know in the comments.

Sitting still and silent since 1976, Hodgson Mill was built in 1897. Nestled near Bryant Creek in the southern Missouri Ozarks, it supplied meal to this little community and beyond for generations. I can’t decide which perspective I like best. What say you? Let me know in the comments.

I hurriedly processed the first image in my truck at 3am the night this was taken last week. I finally had some time to work on it in better conditions. This was captured on the Florida gulf coast last week during the Perseids Meteor Shower. It is a two shot composite. The foreground was taken at the end of blue hour at the same location and the sky is a single long exposure.
