Welcome back to 🦅🦊🐿️🦝🐞🐛

Today’s guest is the Blue-Winged Warbler (Vermivora cyanoptera)!

The Blue-Winged Warbler may be on its way south for the winter, but fall migration offers a chance to spot this bright little warbler in gardens, parks, and other open spaces as it stops to refuel. During this journey, look for it moving through shrubs and low vegetation, where it searches for insects among the leaves.

Welcome back to 🦅🦊🐿️🦝🐞🐛

Today’s guest is the Magnolia Warbler (Setophaga magnolia)!

The Magnolia Warbler is often found at the outer edges of trees where it picks insects from the undersides of leaves. During spring and fall migration, keep an eye on the treetops and shrubs. Its bright yellow belly, white wing patches, and bold black streaks make it easy to pick out among the leaves.

Welcome back to 🦅🦊🐿️🦝🐞🐛

Today’s guest is the American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis)!

A female American Goldfinch pauses for a meal on a coneflower, reminding us that the flowers we leave standing can become an important source of food for birds. Before you reach for the garden shears, consider leaving those spent blooms in place. Your garden may look a little less tidy, but the birds will thank you for the seeds!

Welcome back to 🦅🦊🐿️🦝🐞🐛

Today’s guest is the Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea)!

Scarlet Tanagers are incredible long-distance migrants, traveling thousands of miles each spring and fall. Males arrive first, claiming territories where they’ll nest, forage, and raise the next generation.

One of the most breathtaking birds to find hidden high in the treetops.

Have you ever spotted one?

Welcome back to 🦅🦊🐿️🦝🐞🐛

Today’s guest is the Red-Winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus)!

Often mistaken for a large, streaky sparrow, her rich brown plumage and bold eyebrow stripe provide excellent camouflage, helping her blend into marsh grasses while tending her nest.

Females choose territories with the best access to food, water, and protection. Unlike most birds, Red-Winged Blackbirds are polygynous, and a single male may defend a territory that attracts several females, each building and caring for her own nest.

Welcome back to 🦅🦊🐿️🦝🐞🐛

Today’s guest is the White-Breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis)!

The White-Breasted Nuthatch brings a unique presence to the forest, easily recognized by its crisp white face, blue/gray back, and upside down movements as it creeps along tree trunks in search of food. With powerful legs and a sharp bill, this small climber can move headfirst down bark while uncovering insects and seeds hidden among the trees.
