Something interesting about the northern flicker is that unlike most woodpeckers, it primarily feeds on the ground!

Finding a nest gives you a lot more opportunity to see their behavior and colors.

Here a northern flicker is carrying away a f***l sack (baby p**p), as the babies p**p, the adults constantly remove the f***l matter throughout the day.

The question “what lived in this” while holding the spiraling shell of a lightning whelk is what inspired this 12-page feature story with Smithsonian Magazine where we explore some of southwest Florida’s most fascinating mollusks that inhabit the iconic shells you find on the beach in “Who Dwells in a Shell?”. 🐚

If you’ve ever been to the beach and came across a beautiful shell, it’s a magical experience! But how often do we get to see what LIVES in those shells...and what has created that shell? Like me, you may have wondered “what lived in here?”.

Mollusks don’t just inhabit these amazing beach treasures, their shell grows with them as they grow, most being born with that shell! Throughout human history shells have been used as money, headdresses, bridal pieces, symbols of wealth, decor, and reminders of a great beach vacation. Outside of all these human uses, the true beauty will always lie with the mollusks that created them.

So, next time you find a beautiful shell on the beach, know you’re not just finding a keepsake, but the beautiful creation of a mollusk that used to call it home!

With skippers, territorial disputes are common, often defending an area from intruders by chasing them out.

I’ve spent all summer trying to catch this behavior, these little butterflies are insanely fast! Right after this shot, the skipper feeding was chased out of the area.
