Long's Drug Store has been an important part of the Bearden community for 68 years but now it's time to say farewell. Thank you Hank for continuing the legacy as long as you could. A few years back I recorded some memories with Jim Peck that I eventually posted on his memorial site after he passed away in 2021. Please, please, please - at the very least - record their story, long story or short, on your phone. It's SO easy but then it's SO sad when they're dead and you can't ever hear the sound of their voice again. I know - because I never recorded my Mom's sweet, Southern voice.

Today is the third anniversary of the passing of Kyle Testerman. He had a fascinating and accomplished life. You can read all about him here on his memorial page, see photos of his life and watch videos of good friend's stories, and even share a memory about Kyle yourself if you feel so inclined. Thank you for your leadership in the Knoxville community. You will be forever missed, Kyle!

While working with Ann Gordon Dempster on her life story she told of the night when she was 9 years old and sitting at the dinner table with her dad - George. He was "tinkering" with an idea and looking to find the pivot point where a box could pick up a heavy load and then tip over to unload. He had a cigar box with thumb tacks pushed in each end and told young Ann to fill it with dinner rolls. Presto! The Dempster Dumpster was invented!

The garbage truck celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. I know, you're thinking Jalopnik should have thrown it a real bash and we're so irresponsible for glossing over an incredibly important milestone like this. Apologies, really.
