Some scenes and stills from a rainy summer wedding day on 16mm film 🎥

Not every wedding day is sunny and bright. Many of our portfolios as wedding photographers and filmmakers show only the perfect weather days, but that’s not how it works. You may have rain, you may have sun, we may be outside or have to move into a tent. One of the most valuable skills for a wedding professional is adaptability. I know my gear, I know what can brave a little rain and what can’t, I know which films to use in all lighting scenarios and how it will look under the tent versus out in the open.

Whatever your wedding day brings, it will be what you make it. And on this day, it was absolutely perfect.

Capturing the essence of a wedding day in a photo gallery means spending a lot of time photographing your people.

Their laughter, their tears, the pure joy on the dance floor.

I know (most) everyone you’ve invited to your wedding is important to you, so they are important to me too.

A big part of wedding planning is creating the timeline. Your planner will work with you on this, as will I, but in the end it’s really up to you! One of the questions I hear the most is about timing your couples portraits.

So how much time do you need for couples portraits?

This depends on a few things:

Do you want to go somewhere specific, like a coffee shop you love or a park?
Do you want a wide variety of poses or just one or two posed photos for the family?

More time gives us some time to relax!
You can talk, bring a drink along, settle into the mini session. To me this is 30 minute to an hour. In such a fast paced day, I do love a bit of a break. This was a part of my own wedding that I cherish.

A quick session gives you more time with guests!
This works perfectly fine for couples who prioritize candids.

The sweet spot? Talk to your photographer about it. I find the 20-30 minute range is plenty if we’re staying nearby, but more is almost always better in my opinion.

What do you think?

A moment for the bakers 😘

The last few years I’ve seen more creative cakes and desserts at weddings, and I’m obsessed with them.

Baking is an absolute art form!! And there is an artist for everyone. My partner and I went for gluten free donut holes by a local pastry chef and they were so so so good. Had I known my new cake friends at the time, I would’ve probably gone for these fun vintage cakes, so now I will be celebrating every birthday with a gf 😍

Donut walls, cookie tables, vintage tiny cakes, gigantic elegant cakes, even a sheet cake from Publix. Whatever your wedding vibe is, your cake is a fun way to share it.

Need a baker? I have a list of vendors I love to work with!! 🤍😍🍰

I tagged as many as I had record of, several of these posts are a few years old!

Switching to reception mode 🪩

A few of my favorites from dinner and dancing with Kirsten and Nick.

After their church ceremony, we went to for the rest of the evening. As you can see, a lot of fun was had. Props for the dance floor?? Tiny footballs?? Beads?? They thought through every detail 😍

One week into my 30s and feeling really really wonderful.

I took this first photo on film this morning and developed it in the afternoon. My nails are chipped from rock climbing, too-long bangs pinned back like a little kid, and oh so cozy in the Sinclair gas station sweatshirt I bought for Mack in Colorado.
The seeds I planted in my garden are starting to sprout, and I’ve taken up running, with the help of Mack who knows way more about training than i think I ever will.
I’m typing this up with coffee in a mug that I made and our cat Smokey laying on my lap, like he always does as soon as I sit down to work.
29 was a really hard year, full of grief and injury and trying to run a business in the midst of it all. I so wish my dad and grandma could have been here to see me turn 30. But I learned so much about myself. The year was full of little moments of beauty, from the support of friends to traveling across the world photographing weddings. The whole decade took me to some incredible places. I found climbing, I learned all the crazy things you learn in your 20s paired with the pandemic of course, I met and married the love of my life, and we finished off the decade exploring Iceland and sitting under the northern lights in the freezing midnight air.

My photography business is the only full time job I’ve ever had, and what an absolute privilege it is! (Sorry to my scarcely used bachelors degree) I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’ll be pouring my heart and soul into photography for a long long time.

Thank you for letting me document the most precious moments of your lives over the years. It means the world. 🥹

Here’s to 30!! Catch me in my bucket hat with a camera around my neck taking my cat for walks, in this new decade the weirdo within is gonna be on full display. 💃

Let’s meet at the studio and develop film 😍

I’ve been making a point to live more slowly, so to speak. I want quiet mornings and bike commutes. So I’ve brought this into my business as well, developing and scanning my film for each project.

It feels more like an art form to me. It feels tangible and I have more control through the whole process, which makes my galleries feel more complete. I looooove my film labs, but adding this into the wedding photography process has meant so much to me and hopefully to my couples as well. 🤍

I’m learning so much more about photography and older cameras as I go too!

Locking in and developing a bag of film from photographing a wedding is my new favorite way to spend an afternoon 🤍
