Sometimes zooming all the way in isn’t the best shot. I liked how the branches framed this Roadside Hawk that was calling, fittingly, alongside the road.

After tragic recent news from Hawaii, I was looking at photos I hadn’t yet posted from my trip in January. Hawaii’s avifauna has always lived on the brink, the nature of remote island life. 27% of Hawaii’s bird species are estimated to have gone extinct since Polynesian settlement since around 400 AD and many more since then after contact with the west. (A reminder that detrimental human impact is not new!)

I was disappointed to miss several species on Kauai but the recent news explains it. The ‘Akikiki is now thought to have gone extinct in the wild in the last year and the ‘Akeke’e is thought to be functionally extinct there. The ‘I’iwi was a hoped for bird but they believe its population has plummeted from several thousand birds a few years ago to as few as four individuals in the Alaka’i plateau now.

A combination of climate change, avian malaria, and particularly abandonment by the current administration of funding to mitigate these threats are to blame. Last year’s government shutdown stopped vital mosquito control work and that was a final nail (of many) in the coffin for these birds.

You have to be a birder to understand how incredible this photo is. Swifts are relatives of hummingbirds that fly very high in the sky and very rarely do you get good views of. A group of 50 to 100 of these White-collared Swifts were flying up and down the course of a river at a waterfall. As I was getting bitten to death by mosquitoes and challenged by the hummingbird like speed of these high flying birds, I managed to get a few good shots of them as they zipped by.
