This is one of the questions I get asked most as someone who spends a lot of time on boats, beaches, and underwater. So here is my sunscreen lineup after years of trial and error ☀️🧴

The truth is, I don’t think there’s one perfect sunscreen.

Since switching away from conventional sunscreens, I’ve tried a lot of different options. Some left me looking like a ghost. Some stained my swimsuits. Some made my dive mask fog instantly. Some just didn’t hold up to long days in the sun.

These are the ones that have made it into my rotation.

For me, it’s less about finding the “perfect” sunscreen and more about finding something that fits your lifestyle and activities.

A few things I look for:
✔️ Mineral-based whenever possible
✔️ Minimal white cast
✔️ Doesn’t stain all my gear
✔️ Doesn’t make my mask fog
✔️ Actually stays on during long boat and dive days

And honestly, sometimes it’s about coverage too. A sun hoodie, hat, neck gaiter, sunglasses, and a little common sense go a long way.

I’ve also heard a lot of discussion around reducing seed oils and whether that affects how easily people burn. While it’s an interesting topic, if you’re spending all day in the sun like I am, I’d still recommend protecting your skin.

As for “reef-safe” claims… I’m personally not convinced any sunscreen is truly impact-free once it enters the ocean. The best we can do is stay informed, make thoughtful choices, and use physical protection whenever possible.

These are simply the products that have worked best for me after years of trial and error in the water.
