Friday night I had the listening pleasure of attending and photographing the concert hosted by Caledonia Pipes And Drums Band. They were joined on stage by the Grand Rapids Police Pipe Band, Wild Heather Celtic Folk Music Band, and members of the Muskegon Regional Police Pipes and Drums to form an outstanding show.

My son started playing bagpipes about 3 years ago, when prompted by his band director. He came home one night after percussion lessons and nonchalantly informed me that he had thought about it, worked it all out, and would be starting bagpipe lessons next as he walked up the steps to his room. It was the first time I had heard anything about it... and obviously had to call him back down, because I had QUESTIONS. 🤣 Fast forward a few years, and now he is preparing to compete in a bagpipe competition with his friend this spring.

If you had told me at any point that I'd be suffering from perma-grin at a bagpipe concert watching my teenage son on stage, I'd have laughed at you. But music is a wonderful gift, and I'm wildly blessed to have kids that have thrown themselves whole heartedly into it.

As the director stated on stage, once you learn to play bagpipes, you can take them just about anywhere in the world and find a group to play with. They are not quite as obscure as one would think. Friday night's concert had pipers and drummers from all over Michigan, of all skill and experience levels. Some players have been playing less than a full year, while others have 40+ years experience.

I do hope this becomes an annual tradition. I look forward to hearing the sounds of pipes and drums for years to come!

Last weekend was a busy weekend with LOTS of fun activities! One of my very dear friends let me borrow her kids for the weekend to re-live what it was like to have younger ones with me for the fun activities around the holidays. With my big kids, they are now usually part of the entertainment, which I LOVE, but I do miss having them by my side to watch their little faces glow with smiles and excitement. I'm so blessed to have "chosen family" with younger kids to dwell those moments with. It made it extra fun to have them with us to cheer for my big kids as they marched past us playing Christmas carols at the Santa Parade. After the festivities, my daughter brought them "backstage" to see how they take the lights off their drums and store them. We wrapped up the night with hot cocoa and Christmas movies, keeping our toes warm after freezing at the parade.

Below are some shots of that experience, and our view of Caledonia Bands as they marched past us this year. I'm grateful for these memories in a season that can be so hard to slow down in!

This weekend has been full of Christmas and amazing music!!! It's a busy time of year, but so much fun! These photos are from the fundraiser on Friday for Caledonia Bands, hosted by the middle school and high school Jazz Bands. Lots of fun Jazz tunes, as well as some jazzy Christmas tunes, with a few small ensembles, food from Butcher Block Social , and lots of work behind the scenes! Mr. Welfare, Mr. Raaymakers, and Mrs. Thompson led our bands to a successful evening by helping them prepare, while the students decorated and took leadership over setting up the evening. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our band programs! If you would like to donate, the QR Code featured in the photo is working, please feel free to use it to donate to the program!

Having a senior of my own this year, I didn't get to stand behind the camera for senior night, because we were the ones in front of the camera this time! A sweet friend offered to take my camera for me and snap some photos, so I could be sure to have a couple of the evening. I have not edited any of the photos, and am simply uploading them... In this collection, you will see a perfect example of why I usually stand BEHIND the camera 😆.

In any case, you'll see at the end that this year's senior class is actually a pretty big chunk of the band. We sure are going to miss seeing these kids on the field next year. But man, has it been a FUN ride! Congratulations, Caledonia Bands Class of 2026. You make us so proud!!!!!!!

Well, I'm not really sure what happened between spring and fall, but here we are, and it seems like we just flew right through the summer! I took a TON of photos over the summer, but haven't uploaded them to the page, because frankly, life was moving so fast I didn't have time to sort through them.

Now we are in the full swing of "Bandtober" and I'm a month behind on editing and posting photos of the games/performances I've been to. So... here are some unedited photos of our game from September 19th. It was our "youth game", where the elementary and middle school teams were invited to participate at the varsity game. What a fun time!!

Last Friday I had the privilege of tagging along with Caledonia Pipes and Drums while they joined with other bagpipe bands from around the state to play for the Armed Forces Thanksgiving. It was an awesome experience. The bagpipe community is very welcoming and supportive of each other, and did a wonderful job leading the parade from the Gerald R. Ford Museum across the river to the J.W. Marriott, where I was invited to partake in a wonderful luncheon and listen to some keynote speakers tying together the honor, dedication, and sacrifice that our Armed Forces and First Responders pour into our lives every day, even when everything seems to be quiet and peaceful from the outside. Here are some of my favorite images that I was able to capture from the day.

It's definitely spring!

I spent my lunch hour at work trying to capture the adorable family of sandhill cranes outside my building. I was able to capture a few beautiful sites, without even leaving the campus! Unfortunately, my excitement got the best of me, and there was a lot of camera shake. Nobody warns you about the adrenaline rush of taking pictures of God's creation. My skills were especially challenged when the crane chick was buried in the tall grasses. I'm sure it's all by design to camouflage the baby and protect it from predators, but trying to get a clear shot, through the grass, while your heart is pounding was definitely a feat I will need to practice more!!

The killdeer was a nice bonus, and the great egret was an especially nice treat to catch as my lunch break was ending. But my favorite part of lunch may have been rescuing a turtle from the middle of the road!

In any case, after work, I was still feeling quite inspired, so I made a quick stop at a nearby park, and got to enjoy the song of an oriole in the tree canopy. It took me a while to find him in the tree top, but what a beautiful moment when I did!

These may not be the best photos, but I sure had a great time capturing them today!!

Yesterday was a day! I had some meetings starting in the morning, running into the afternoon. I had hoped to meet with my dear friend when my meetings were over for tea, but the stress and anxiety of the month of May overtook me, and I crashed hard with a migraine.

People like to throw the word "migraine" around as term for a "really bad headache". I've had migraines with aura since I was a young child. I've seen specialists and neurologists throughout my life who could never explain why I get them. What I've learned over the years is that my triggers are mostly a combination of stress and hormones, with the occasional food sensitivity. I avoid mango like the plague. My migraines usually start with visual disturbance, inability to speak, and numbness in the hands and feet. Sometimes with this aura, I lose control over my limbs, and am unable to get the message from my brain to my legs that they need to move. (When this happens, I know it will be a several days long event). Once the aura starts, I know I have about 20 minutes to get to a safe place (no driving, someplace private, dark, and with minimal sound) before the onslaught of head pain kicks in. The worst migraines come with vomiting and stomach symptoms. The pain lasts several hours, and while medications can help, nothing can really make it go away. It just takes time and faith. Yesterday's migraine was on the mild side, and lasted only about 6 hours.

I was so disappointed when I realized what was happening. I've been looking forward to seeing one of my favorite local artists, Kyle Joe, at The Stray for weeks. So I was hellbent on defeating this migraine before he was scheduled to go on... at least enough to get myself there and sit quietly and let the music soothe me. Even if I was in pain, his music is soft and gentle most of the time, and a nice distraction for someone battling sensory issues and pain.

Lucky for me, the right mix of meds, a dark room, and some sleep allowed me to pull it together enough to get dressed and go. I brought my laptop and photo gear to entertain myself while waiting/between sets, and hoped for the best. I was grateful to last the whole concert, between all 3 sets of performers. I may not have gotten the best photos, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching for special moments between the performers, including Kyle Joe and his adorable twin daughters, Dede Alder, Amy Love, and Ben Traverse.

The nausea and a dull pain persist today, but I'm glad I pushed through to be able to enjoy the music last night. Sometimes, self care means taking rest you don't have space for. Sometimes it means forcing yourself forward even when you don't feel well.

What a way to start spring break 2025! We started day one with a trip to Crystal Lake area to spend some time with our dear friends/neighbors at their cottage. Once there, we went for a trail walk around the nature preserve at Mecosta Community College. The frogs were waking up and ready to say hello, and the skunk cabbages were prolific! There is something special about spending a few hours out in the wild world. We are forever blessed to have friends willing to share such a beautiful world with us!
