There are few creatures as majestic as the adult Bald Eagle. I'll never tire of seeing them.
Following up the winter snow geese migration post with what comes after the geese come in, and that's HUNDREDS of bald eagles. Hunting, fighting, flying, calling, it's all incredibly action packed and I always enjoy meeting the visitors that come from all over!

Looking back to winter migration, and it was a great one this year! Every year the snow geese migrate through in insane numbers and it's always a super fun and noisy show!

I am SO excited to finally share what ended up being a trip highlight for me!! One of our guides had a very unique relationship with this cheetah mother, and as a result of all of his care and time to earn her trust, she will allow his guests to share space with her and her cubs if she is comfortable. Well, she was extremely comfortable with our group, and evidently me (I've included a video to show just how close they all chose to come to us). We had two amazing visits with her and the cubs, watching her train them, play with them, teach them, feed them. Listen for her purring sounds she is making in the video. She has an entire language she uses for communicating with her cubs, and we spent so much time with them that we ended up being able to recognize what she was saying to them! Simply no real words to describe the experience.
Many more images to share of them, but here is my favorite, which will soon be hanging in large format on my own wall 😍

Few sounds compare to that of a lion's roar. We were very lucky to hear them quite often, especially towards the end of our stay. A pair were mating, or going through the motions at least, extremely close to camp the last two days, and his roar could be heard throughout the evenings. Got a little surprise the first time we spotted them as they were RIGHT outside the gate of the grounds!

Giraffe fight! Technically anyway, though it was pretty polite. We set out to photograph giraffe portraits on this particular drive, and were instead rewarded with nearly an hour of behavior study. Male giraffes will engage in "necking", very different in the animal kingdom as it is a form of battle, often to establish dominance or breeding rights. Scroll through to see images of the initial posturing, the swing, and the targeted blows.

Crocuta crocuta: the Spotted Hyena.

Observing this species was so fascinating because coming into this trip, and I'll be the first to admit how ridiculous this sounds, my limited knowledge of hyenas was very much influenced by The Lion King. Turns out Disney was actually sued over their inaccurate portrayal of them! Spotted hyenas are incredibly intelligent animals, and at the very top of all predators in South Africa, really only second to Lions, if that. They take down much larger prey than cheetahs and leopards, and lions will even attempt to steal from them rather than the other way around. It is clear they are very much in charge, and we watched them run, attack, snarl, and protect their food from all the other scavengers for hours (more to share on that later). But what amazed me were the moments they rested and the very familiar look of calm in their eyes, just like I see in my own dogs, peered back at me.

The elusive Leopard. We spent much of the week at our first location wishing for this sighting with nearly zero hope it would actually happen. On our second to last day, one of our groups had the thrill of a daytime sighting, though extremely brief. Later that day a few of us decided to go on a nighttime game drive, which is a wild experience in itself! We were rewarded with this gorgeous female emerging from the darkness. Unbelievable to watch these apex predators in the wild!

Back to real life, and working hard at editing with the goal of creating a coffee table photo book. Perhaps I'll design one to sell?
Starting the week with a heavy hitter. The white rhino is the largest of the 5 types of rhino, as well as the second largest land mammal (elephant taking first).

In the literal last hour, the white goddess appeared. Mishka is the last wild white tiger in the world, and is, rightfully so, extremely challenging to spot. An amazing last drive to end an amazing trip!
