The audio didn’t have to call us out that hard 💀

Not quite a pro, not quite an influencer… just stuck in that sweet spot of paddling way too much and making sure my followers never forget it. If you love the grind (and the pretty views), you get it.

A quick recap of the paddler life lately: tractor pull grinds, dialing in those steering turns, a proud 2nd place finish from our first preseason race, and winding up for regatta season with a beautiful canal session this week.

Drop a 🙋‍♀️ if you’re also just training hard and occupying everyone’s feed!

They say elements align when the energy is right. Last week, during our very first practice in the koa canoe after our coach called the crew, we were greeted by the most vibrant, saturated double rainbow right over the water. It felt like an instant blessing.

That night, the pre-race nerves got to me. I had a vivid dream that I was incredibly stressed out and shaking before the flags—until it started raining, and a rainbow appeared, and I woke up. Fast forward to race morning. As we arrived at the beach for the opening ceremony and the lei drop, lo and behold, a massive double rainbow stretched directly over our Kailua Canoe Club's tent and our canoe. I felt it right in my stomach—this day was protected, blessed, and special.

We took home the gold in our very first race of the season. 🥇🛶✨
Paddling in a koa canoe carries so much legacy, mana, and history. To feel that energy, combined with the magic of the ocean and the sky, is something I'll never forget. Rainbows have my whole heart right now. It was the perfect reminder that the hard work, the early mornings, and the rain always lead to something beautiful.

Finding Harmony: Adrenaline, Ancestry, and Why the Ocean Always Wins

If you’ve ever competed, you know the absolute madness of the days leading up to the first race. The crew line-ups usually aren't called until a day or two before, making the anticipation unreal.

When you finally line up at the flags, the adrenaline is exhilarating—and incredibly difficult to manage. You want to perform at a high level, but when your hands are shaking, and your chest is tight with excitement, it’s so easy to blow out. The hardest part is calming your nerves to blend perfectly with the five other people in the canoe. In a short regatta, there is zero room for error. Sometimes, the faster crew loses simply because of a bad lane, a tide change, or a lucky wave. Lining up at that start line requires a profound mix of faith, confidence, and hope that your months of training will show up when the flag drops.

But when you are racing in that koa canoe, you can feel the history. The energy inside the boat becomes almost tangible. The race itself goes by in the blink of an eye, but the day and festivities surrounding it stay with you forever.

Being a waterwoman is about everything that happens outside the boat, too. It’s talking story on the sand after a grueling piece. It’s lifting each other up after a loss and cheering until your throat is raw when you win. It’s the unwritten rule that when you step out of the canoe, you grab everyone else's paddles, no matter whose they are. It’s a beautiful, rare culture where everyone brings more than they need and takes less than they need.

Testing yourself against the elements is the ultimate lesson in humility. No single person, and no crew, will ever beat the ocean. The ocean wins every single time. So when you do experience a win, or even just a perfectly executed race, it feels like you’ve successfully found a temporary harmony with nature. It is deeply spiritual.

I am not Native Hawaiian, but I come from a long, ancestral line of Nordic seafarers. Seafaring communities are in my blood. Being out in the wild water, testing my limits, and respecting the volatile elements wakes up something very ancient and inherent within me, even though I’m far from where I came from ancestrally; the ocean connects us all.

This deep connection to the water is the driving force behind my photography style. It’s why I specialize in in-water imagery and beach lifestyle sessions—because the ocean is a place of healing, playing, and resetting. When I bring clients out into the elements with me, my goal is to help them experience that exact same magic, freedom, and connection to the place I love most.

Carrying the Legacy: Canoe Blessings and Community

The traditional canoe blessing is deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture, and it’s a massive part of why I love paddling. It connects you directly to what makes these islands special and honors the original voyagers who arrived here.

When our club gathers for a blessing, the energy is palpable. Hundreds of people show up, all focusing their attention on the koa wood canoe. These canoes are highly valued, some at around $300,000, but their true worth to the club is entirely spiritual. They hold an immense history.

When we sit in the seats of a koa canoe, we are taught to remember the legacy we are holding. You think of the people who sat in that exact seat before you, some of whom are no longer with us. Then you think of the generations who will sit there long after you are gone. Carrying a piece of that story is a heavy responsibility, but it is a profound honor. It embodies the classic Hawaiian worldview: honoring your ancestors (kupuna) while mindfully preparing the space for those coming up behind you. It forces you to check your ego. You don't bring anger or negativity into that boat; you only put in positive, helpful, unified energy to give your best to everyone before and after you.

Honoring the canoe and the ocean before the season starts just feels right. Anyone who spends time in the ocean knows she has her own agenda; there is no predicting her. We ask for blessings not to bypass the rough water, but to pray that our training has made us ready for whatever situation arises.

For me, this club and this ‘ohana aren't just a part of my life—they are my life. On my days off, I still want to be on the water with these exact same people. When you buy into this lifestyle, it’s a constant exchange of giving and taking support.

That is exactly how I view my photography business. I refuse to treat my clients as a transaction. I’m not here for a "one and done" paycheck; I’m here because I deeply love the people I get to work with, and I want them to feel like they are a part of my community. When a family books with me, I want them to leave thinking, "That's our photographer for life."

I always tell my clients: don’t be a stranger, stay in touch, and ask me anything. Once you book a session with me, I am your friend. Just like being out on the water, I show up to a photo shoot because there is nowhere else in the world I would rather be.

Have you ever wondered what a surprise proposal actually looks like from the photographer’s perspective? 👀 Let me tell you, the adrenaline is REAL.

This was supposed to be a standard family lifestyle session... until it wasn’t. 🤭 Capturing a moment like this in real-time requires a lot of stealth, perfect timing, and holding your breath so you don't ruin the surprise.

Watch it unfold right here! Would you want your proposal caught on camera like this? 👇✨

Showing Up: What Tractor Pulls and Training Taught Me About Serving My Clients

There is a beautiful metaphor hidden in the daily grind of training. Something I deeply believe in is the power of tiny, daily actions. While showing up to paddling practice four or five times a week doesn't always feel "tiny," it is that consistent, repetitive effort that builds something undeniably strong.

A lot of the time, we measure that strength through "tractor pulls"—an intense training exercise in which each of us pulls a three-man canoe, with our coach steering, for time. This year, when the data came out, every single one of us had improved significantly. Seeing that progress written down in black and white is incredible, but the true reward goes much deeper than numbers.

As women, we carry so much noise around body image. But for me, paddling shifts the focus entirely. When I know my body is capable of something this strong—when I can paddle my ass off—it fills me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and love for what my body can do. It's not about being the absolute best in the world; it's about being proud that my body serves me to do what I love. That confidence and self-love only come through habitual, hard training.

This mindset completely shapes how I show up for my photography clients. Paddling isn't just exercise; it refills my cup and gives me a sense of purpose. As a small business owner, you have to stay in touch with the real world, and being at the beach and in the elements every single day keeps me grounded.

When clients book a saltwater experience with me and worry about the weather or the tides, I have answers for them instantly because I live out there. If a unique question comes up, I have an entire network—my team and community—to run things by. The grit it takes to prepare for a heavy ocean session is the exact same grit I bring to preparing for a photo shoot.

And honestly, one of my favorite bonuses is shooting at spots like Lanikai. When clients or their kids see the canoes and ask, "What is that?" I get to share the story of what these teams and boats can do. Bringing that depth of local knowledge and connection to the water is just one of the ways I get to offer something truly special to the families I photograph.

The postcard version of Hawaii is beautiful, but the dramatic, thundering version has its own kind of magic. ⛈️⚡

I love the sun and the shorebreak, but a heavy tropical downpour is a beautiful reminder to appreciate the island in all her moods. The sunny beach days will always be back, but today? Today we lean into the cozy side of paradise.
Because rain or shine, it’s always Aloha Friday. 🤙✨

When a birthday party turns into an unofficial workday... 🌊✨

This clip was from the other weekend, celebrating ‘s birthday at China Walls. (She also took the cute cover photo of my better half and me!) I brought my camera along to capture some fun memories for her as a birthday gift. But if you know me, you know I can’t sit still when the surf is up!

I ended up snapping some shots of the surfers and bodyboarders out in the lineup, uploaded them to a public gallery later, and wound up selling digital downloads from that exact session.

It’s so funny how a casual day jumping off the rocks turns into “work” just because you love what you do. Hey, we’ve got to make a living somehow, right? I’m just lucky my office looks like this. 🤝

Drop a 🌊 if this is your kind of workday! (Link in bio to check out the full galleries or book your own saltwater session.)
