Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

We’re celebrating the ways our cultures exist today around the world, informed both by the traditions of our ancestors and the strength of our communities, as well as our present relationships with our lands, lifestyles and livelihoods.

We embrace our cultures not only through ceremony and dance, but through the everyday ways we live, work, create, and care for our communities. From coffee with a coworker or fixing the outboard to digital art forms or uplifting each other’s socials, these are all ways we create bonds, tell stories, and live our current lives proud of who we are, where we come from, and where we’re going.

The 2026 ANB/ANS Grand Camp Convention is currently underway in Kichx̱áan (Ketchikan), running through October 7. This important annual event is an opportunity for the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood to gather both for governance purposes and to discuss priorities affecting our people.

Both organizations have walked a bold path of advocacy since their founding in the second decade of the Twentieth Century, and there was much courageous work before then that went into their formation in the face of discrimination. For that, and to everyone involved, we would like to say gunalchéesh, háw’aa, t’oyaxsut ‘nüüsm.

We would also like to offer a special congratulations to hosts Ketchikan Camp 14 and Saxman Camp 15, who are both celebrating their 100-year anniversary this Convention!

It is an important traditional teaching to never take more than we need when we harvest, but so too is it important to consider “we” as more than ourselves: “we” includes our community, our friends and our relatives.

Just like we can share gumboots with our friends and our relatives, we can also share these teachings and traditional practices with our community and our young people.

Feel welcome to share these thoughts and this information with anyone you feel may benefit from them. For more information about coastal foraging and how to prepare the delicious foods you find, watch the full episode on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/OFBfQdeJo2U?is=YcElqvmKLKW9q4fF

Good things take time, and everyone has their own process.

Heinyaa Ḵwáan makes Indian Cheese from the smoked and fermented eggs of sockeye or coho salmon. Depending on the individual, the fermentation process can take a week or more.

There are multiple ways to arrive at the final product of this savory spread, just like every business and organization has different processes it prefers.

Similar to when we listen to our teachers sharing their techniques with us, so too do we work with our partners to carry their best practices and processes forward into the solutions we collaborate on together.

How long do you ferment for? Coho or sockeye?
What does your organization want to carry forward?

We hope to see you there!

The Yáadaas clan pole was taken from Old Kasaan and shipped to California for the 1906 Indian Crafts Exhibition. It is estimated to be over 140 years old, and spent more than 100 years far from home.

A few years ago, it was identified in a museum in Colorado Springs, and funding was secured to bring it back home to the Haida village of Kasaan on Prince of Wales Island. We were honored to be asked to help document the process of reclamation, return and celebration.

Enjoy this soundbite that still sticks with us today from Kasaan resident and Haida artist Yaats Passing to the importance of bringing the Yáadaas pole back home, and what this powerful piece of art means for the community’s cultural identity.

Never forget that you are not alone. Now, then, and forever.

Generations of advocacy and collaboration have gone into the work that built the spaces where we gather in community today.

The Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall, where Tlingit & Haida is hosting the 91st Annual Tribal Assembly this week, is one of those places.

The Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood both formed in the second decade of the Twentieth Century as grassroots organizations to fight for civil rights and social justice.

Together, their land claims advocacy led in part to the federal recognition of Tlingit & Haida as a sovereign tribal government, empowered to gather our people together to steward our future.
The 91st Annual Tribal Assembly will be held this Wednesday, September 23, through Friday, September 25. This year’s theme is “Unbreakable Unity, Ancestral Strength” — a powerful nod to what is possible when we form as one across space and time.

Similarly, the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood Grand Camp Convention’s theme this year is “Connecting Generations Through Our Values” — reflecting the strength of traditional values paired with community action. The Grand Camp Convention will be held October 4-7 in Ketchikan, where both the Ketchikan Camp and Saxman Camp will celebrate their 100 year anniversaries in 2026.

Nowadays, digital gathering spaces also connect us, which is why Tlingit & Haida invested in Gumboots Go! as a way for our youth to learn traditional practices and historical teachings from earlier generations, as in this video. Online Gumboots Go! resources can be found at ( www.youtube.com//featured ) Háw’aa and gunalchéesh to our Elders and leaders for stewarding these spaces where we can share wisdom across generations.

Gathering together in community to teach and share traditional practices is how we strengthen our ways of life.

Tlingit & Haida launched the Harvest series in order to create digital gathering spaces to share traditional practices like fermenting gink piles, reflecting a core cultural value of using every part of the animal. You can find the complete digital gathering space for the Harvest series on YouTube.

Next week, Tlingit & Haida is hosting an in-person gathering that is paramount to this purpose as they welcome elected delegates and tribal citizens from across Alaska and the West Coast to the 91st Annual Tribal Assembly.

The event will be held September 23–25 at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall, and is free and open to tribal citizens and delegates. More information can be found at:
