My first attempt for star trails photography. Almost didn’t happen due to weather! 😬 Been planning for long time to visit Joshua Tree, had even booked tickets for March 2020, yup, you guessed it right, just the week of Covid pandemic started and everything was shutdown! 😳 Finally after almost 6 years rebooked the trip to JTNP, only to be hit by the worst weather that Southern California has ever seen with rain lasting whole day at Joshua Tree and winds exceeding 40 mph! Even the evening I took this picture weather was really questionable. But right at sunset the clouds parted mostly in the north. We hurriedly looked for a good location, found one close to a parking lot. I set up the camera and tripod in a hurry. At this point another challenge came up, the intervalometer in Canon does not allow more than 30 sec long exposure. To get star trails even with 17 mm, ideally would have liked 45 sec exposure. But the Bulb intervalometer only takes one picture, so I’d need to constantly manually release shutter (not sure though). Finally decided to take chance with 30 sec exposure as sitting outside in 32°F was not ideal (yes it was that cold!). We waited for one hour with bated breath. In the hour at least 20 cars passed and I was worried that would ruin the particular picture. Still by my calculations I thought it wild be 80 pictures at least. In the end I got 97 and the car headlights didn’t ruin any (in fact the foreground tree light is from a picture where a car came in the parking lot!). The Southern California sky is very busy with flights, but luckily I see only two streaks (didn’t have time to delete, instead just used masking to fade them). So, overall not bad for first attempt!

Happy New Year 2026! May it bring peace and joy to everybody in this planet Earth (and may it bring more snow and ice for the Polar Bears).

Lady Aurora Dancing In The Dark. Churchill, Manitoba kept its promise of not just wildlife, but gorgeous sunsets and multiple nights of auroras. While the aurora was there every night, clouds blocked it on 3 out of 5. Finally the last night the weather gods cooperated and we were able to get some nice shots.

The Arctic is teaming with wildlife, is not just the polar bears, but also Arctic hares, foxes, snowy owls. This red fox 🦊 was hard to catch though in the 5 days we were there. Just the evening before the last day though, caught a glimpse of him. It was very dark and he was scuttling around looking for food near the town, this was the only pic I could get of him.

The biggest (I assume an adult male) and probably the oldest (based on the scars) polar bear 🐻‍❄️ we saw on tour. Gave us a good 1 hour show to take as many pictures and videos from multiple angles and locations! 😊

Which picture is better? Original or Edited?

When does a photo stop becoming just a capture from camera and become fake? Obviously AI generated images are fake, but is replacing the sky fake? Before you answer that consider this situation. In the above carousel, in pic #1,2 the sky is replaced. The original is in picture #3. Here’s my explanation on why I edited the sky:
The picture is of the famous Miss Piggy plans crash in Churchill, Manitoba (Google it to get lot of interesting info). Our group reached the place of crash around 4 pm and took lot of pictures in the golden hour. As the sun was setting the dark clouds gave an interesting composition. We were hoping the sky would glow at the sunset and we could stay there and capture it. Unfortunately, we got a call from about an unfortunate kitchen mishap and we could see that wanted to get back to our cabin quickly (later we learnt that our chicken went up in smoke!). So, we headed back home somewhat disappointed. As we reached home, the western sky lit up and I captured two pictures of the sunset near our cabin. If you see the original picture, the sun is setting behind Miss Piggy. So, technically, if we had the opportunity to stay there longer, we would have captured exactly the sunset behind the plane. Based on this, you decide if the first two pictures are fake or just an advantage of technology!

A polar bear mama and two COY (cubs of the year) gave us multiple photo opportunities including one at golden hour through the fields of tundra. As we waited for them to cross the field to their rocky home, the evening sun shone through them to give the unique rim light outline.
