The Civil War and the Battle of MonocacyTroop Movements:

On July 9, 1864, Confederate forces crossed the Monocacy River via a ford onto Worthington Farm. From its fields, Confederates launched three separate advances against Union lines stationed at the neighboring Thomas Farm.

Family Legacy:

John Worthington farmed the land successfully until 1905, and the property remained in the Worthington family until 1953. The National Park Service later purchased the house and farm in 1982.

Early Origins and Ownership

Construction (1851):
The centerpiece Worthington House was built around 1851 by Griffin Taylor, a wealthy local agriculturist, and originally named "Clifton Farm".

The Worthington Era: John T. Worthington and his wife Mary purchased the 300-acre property adjacent to the Monocacy River in 1862, renaming it "Riverside Drive and Farm". .

Field Hospital:

Heavy combat led to numerous casualties, and the Worthington House and its yard served as a Confederate field hospital.

The Cellar Refuge:

While the family sheltered in the boarded-up basement during the fighting, six-year-old
Glenn Worthington peered through the window boards.

The vivid memories inspired him to write Fighting for Time, a prominent 1932 eye-witness history of the battle.
