Mississippi Heard: A Cross-Cultural Endeavor

Mississippi Heard: A Cross-Cultural Endeavor Mississippi Heard is a project connecting two communities: the Russian and the Mississippi. | | ms-modern.com | [email protected]

From October 12 - November 25, Mississippi Heard took place as a walk across the Magnolia State undertaken to hear Mississippians' images of Russia, of America, and of themselves. Inspired by the American Fulbright Program in Russia and sponsored by Mississippi Modern (a non-profit art collective in Jackson, MS), Mississippi Heard aims to collect the conceptions we have of one another. Mississippi

Heard is rooted in a train ride across Russia during the summer of 2014. For one month, writer and videographer, Hanna Miller, and photographer, Stephen Barton, went across the motherland to capture and hear Russians' perceptions of America and how Russians define themselves within their own stereotypes. The walk across the state by Miller and photographer Katya Korableva was undertaken to gather voices and create a dialogue about the similarities between Russia and Mississippi -- similarities such as identity reconstruction in light of a scarring past, literary tradition, and economic disparity. With 60+ interviews from Russia, 200+ interviews from Mississippi, and hundreds of still and moving images from each place, Mississippi Heard is now in its production phase. We are arranging a pop up art show to travel the state -- with photo, film, and audio components. If you know of venue spaces or are interested in sponsorship, email [email protected]. "As the first Islamic history and culture museum in America, we are really breaking those barriers within and outside the Muslim community. Challenging inaccuracies about Islam. We challenge the notion that Muslims don't belong here. We are living with American values and we are part and parcel of the American story … Islam is about peace, unity, justice, equity and love.”

Emad Al-Turk - Co-founder, International Museum of Muslim Cultures

The International Museum of Muslim Cultures (IMMC) of Jackson, Mississippi, celebrates 20 years of service with a virtual fundraiser and photo documentary series, “IMMC Muslim Photo Stories: Voices of Beloved Community”, produced in partnership with Blue Magnolia Films.

Opened in April 2001, IMMC is the first museum of its kind in the country dedicated to educate the American public about Islamic history and culture and the contributions of diverse Muslims to world civilization. Co-founders, Emad Al-Turk, Karen Al-Turk, Okolo Rashid, Sababu Rashid, and their families, hope the museum will bridge people of all faiths, including Christians, Jewish and Muslim, to serve as a model for peaceful coexistence and Beloved Community.

IMMC is located at 201 E. Pascagoula St., Jackson, MS 39201, where the Timbuktu Exhibit is on display; its satellite site at 101 East Capitol Street, Jackson, MS 39201, houses the display of the Covenants Exhibit.

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI
It was Warith Deen Mohammed who reconciled my understanding of Heaven, and a spirituality that would be the force to truly tear down the walls of racism, injustice and inequality. From the Qur'an He said, "There's only one God. And there's only one humanity. No white over black or black over white. The only one that's best among you is the one who is more pious to his Creator.”

Hey, Mississippi Hearders! Long time no see. ;) Our very own Katya Korableva had a tragedy this week. Her apartment caught fire in the kitchen, and there was a lot lost and more damaged. We are sending out an all call for H-E-L-P! Fellow Hearder (who joined the walk for a bit!) Ashley Schneider is taking donations in American dollars via Venmo (-schneider-8).

If you can and would like, please send a dollar or 50 to Ashley, who will then pay the transfer fee to turn them dollars into rubles and get that support to Katya stat. If you want to help but are scared of Venmo, DM us here (or DM me, Hanna Miller), and I will help you figure out a way to make sure our girl isn't left down and out this holiday season.

Please make donations by EOD December 19 if you can. We want to get this moolah to Kat quick.

P.S. Katya's birthday is TOMORROW, December 19!!

"Jackson Public Schools will open August 17. The fall semester will be completed 100% virtually! Children will need school supplies in their homes. We are getting an Adopt-A-Teacher model going, and we are really being very deliberate about matching community resources with school-specific needs.

It is now more important than ever for our Jackson community, including churches and businesses, to come together to ensure that our children have what they need to complete a successful school year.

I continue to say, 'This is an unprecedented situation, requiring an unprecedented response!' We can unite and work together to support our scholars and their families, to build a community around our children that says , 'It’s not about me, but we.’

If you would like to become a Community Partner, or to invest your time, talent or treasure, please register your name, organization and email at this link: https://forms.gle/JwbgkHFCqGE9LS3i8

We have created an electronic document to inventory school specific needs, and will be in touch to inform you of where and how you can make a difference!"

- Thea Faulkner, Director, Partners in Education - Jackson Public Schools

"It’s hard to imagine that what I have to say will surprise anyone who knows me. It is an honor to have been asked to share a bit about myself, and I hope my story will provide comfort to some young person who may be experiencing the same feelings I did while growing up.

We find ourselves living in unprecedented times, facing vulnerabilities personally and in our communities that are tough and challenging.

It’s also a historic moment in which to ensure protection for those most vulnerable and to promote fairness and equality for ALL.

We must not be complacent. We must speak out and push for needed change with bold intentionality. In that regard, I am honored to be asked to share a bit about my life journey."

“Every time you wake up with a breath, you should consider that a blessing. And one of the reasons it's a blessing is because it’s an opportunity to try again.

Unfortunately, people have grown weary. There’s no refuge from collective pain. We’re in that moment now. The fires that are burning in our country, in our communities are fires of helplessness and hopelessness and despair and fear and anger. But we have the opportunity to come together to create fires of warmth – and energy.

The most critical thing, the most immediate and important thing for Jacksonians and Mississippians to do in this time period is to be quiet and to listen. Listen intently, like our collective lives depend on what you hear. It's one thing to see that a person is in pain, and want to help. But you can’t really help until you have heard what is hurting.

One of the things I want to believe most about our leaders is that their hearts are in the right place. My hope for those leaders is that they will have the courage to go to where the smoke and the hurt and the pain is, and then they will use what they learn to inform their decision making. And bring everyone to the table.

I recognize there has been an intentional stripping of agency. But every day presents a new opportunity to go out and connect our intentions and whatever power we have with others. As the scripture says, the three-strand chord is not easily broken. We are able to multiply our strengths when we find others who are of similar mind.

That’s the way it happens. ALL of us have a power. We should search our lives for those instances, because those are the ways that we are most effective.”

• JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI •
"Being in this pivotal moment of having to redefine what makes a community, and what community means to us, we can reclaim our sense of what matters and reconnect to the things that bring us together, rather than the things that keep us isolated.

I see people saying, ‘It may just be my corner of the world, but here are things I can do.’ So we should ask ourselves, ‘Are you sewing things together? Are you part of the fabric making?’ People are realizing we are in this together.”
