Meet Bear 335…better known as Meatball 🐻

This year, Meatball became a mom for the very first time, and she’s had her hands full with three cubs. Watching her learn the ropes of motherhood and care for these cubs has been so much fun.

Being a first time mom as a bear in Alaska is no easy job, but Meatball has been doing an incredible job with these little ones. There’s nothing I cherish more than spending time with bear cubs in the wild

A month in Alaska during peak bear season, and this is what my camera roll looks like. It handled every situation I threw at it - the autofocus is ridiculously good, the image quality is incredible, and it’s become a camera I can trust when every moment counts, even when the weather and light is challenging.

This is just a small look at what I captured. A lot more Alaska content is on the way.

Thanks NikonUSA for a combination that doesn’t miss a thing.

I recently spent time in the Alaskan wilderness with the Nikon Z 8 and the NIKKOR 400mm f2.8 TC VR S. This combo blew my mind in every way. The low light capabilities of the lens at f/2.8 were a total game changer for the early mornings, late nights, and those dark, ominous weather days that Alaska is known for. At the same time, having the internal teleconverter in the lens allowed me to push in to 560mm at f/4 in an instant without needing to change lenses out in the field. That, combined with the Z 8’s 45.7MP sensor, blackout free shooting up to 120fps, and remarkable autofocus meant I was able to get shots I may have missed in the past

Something a little different from what I usually share. These are a few of my favorite images from a storm chasing workshop earlier this summer. Spending days on the road watching the forecast, chasing building storms, and witnessing the incredible power and beauty of the atmosphere was an experience I won’t forget. I grew up watching storms roll in over Lake Michigan, but every supercell we watched out on the plains was different than anything I’d ever seen before. I can’t wait for next summer! Pretty excited to finally share this… I’m officially now shooting with Nikon!

Nikon sent me a Z 8 and the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S to put through real world testing in remote Alaska. After spending weeks photographing bears and other wildlife with this setup, I can honestly say I’m incredibly impressed. The Z 8 handled everything I threw at it, and the 400mm has quickly become one of my favorite lenses I’ve ever used, and this is just the beginning.

I can’t wait to share everything I’ve been working on and everything that’s still to come with this setup.
