"Just a few more days."

Mr. Tom here is almost safe - just three more days in Vermont's Spring Turkey season. Though, in the area he hangs out in near the Quechee Club, he probably doesn't have much hunting pressure! He was a little leery of me, but the only "shooting" I was doing was with my Nikon.

"Stroll With Me"

Tuesday morning, as I drove by this scene, the sun peaking through the trees over this old lane seemed to invite me into the day. I couldn't help but stop and take in the Grace of a new day, full of thankfulness and wonder.

“The Family”

Canada Geese are so common and often a nuisance, yet there is a still a charm to their presence. They typically mate for life and form strong, monogamous bonds. Here is a “family” of three near Quechee Gorge the other day.

The family unit is a beautiful thing, especially in humans where it is designed to mirror and reflect the unity of its Creator. Order, love, and relationship are eternal things, not merely societal constructs.

"The Heart of the Hills"

The last kiss of the sun tonight on the peaks near Stockbridge, Vermont - right in the heart of the Green Mountains. It doesn't get any more "spring" in Vermont than this, as the Belted Galloways graze quietly in this mountain meadow.

“The Silhouette of Vermont”

As it is now known, Camels Hump is certainly the most recognizable mountain in our green hills. It was known as “Moose Shoulder” by the Abenaki, as “Lion Couchant” by Samuel De Champlain, and then as “Camel’s Rump” by Ira Allen. (By the way, “Camel’s Rump” is actually what is stamped on the geodetical survey pin at the summit!)

The summit holds several acres of Alpine grasses and plant life, which only exists above 4,000 feet here in Vermont. From the peak, it is a steep drop all the way down to the Winooski Valley below, which gives it an isolated and prominent place among the mountains around it.

Ancient lore says it was the seat of gods. We know that even at 4,083 feet, it is not a large enough throne for its Creator. It is, however, a beautiful piece of His creation and a delight for those of us who see it, climb it, and wonder at it.

“Heart of the Hills”

This pleasant meadow in the hills of Stockbridge the other evening reminded me of the “green pastures” pictured in the 23rd Psalm. The Good Shepherd leads and provides for his sheep, so that they can graze securely and peacefully - much like these young belted Galloway cattle were doing this evening as the last kiss of the sun grazed the peaks above them.

“The Hummer”

If you’re following this page, you’re also following my photographic learning process. Yesterday, I had the chance to photograph the hummingbird for the first time.

This is a female Ruby-throated hummer, the only variety that migrates to our part of the world. They are spectacular birds, and fascinating. Weighing less than a nickel and beating their wings more than 50 times per second, they can burn as much as half of their body weight on their migratory trip from South America.

It’s truly a wonder that God would give us such amazing creatures seemingly only to cause us to stand in awe at His intricate beauty.
